Presentation transcript:

Smoker’s Cough  Healthy bronchi are coated with mucous and cilia. Tar makes the mucous thick, slowing the action of the cilia. The nicotine paralyzes the cilia allowing particles to accumulate in the trachea and bronchial tubes.

Chronic Diseases of the Lungs  Bronchitis – inflammation of the bronchi - deep, harsh coughing.  Emphysema – many small, flexible air sacs burst and form a few large, rigid air pockets and block air from escaping.

Heart and Circulatory System  Nicotine speeds up the heart rate – requiring more oxygen.  Carbon monoxide decreases the amount of oxygen the blood can carry.  Nicotine increases the blood pressure – increasing the heart’s work load.  Nicotine decreases the blood flow in the heart’s own arteries.  Nicotine triggers the formation of blood clots.

CANCER: How it Develops… 1. Exposure to a carcinogen. 2. Entry of the carcinogen into the cell. 3. Cell mutation. 4. Exposure to a promoter (speeds up process) 5. Out of control multiplication of mutated cells. 6. Tumor.
