Presentation transcript:

Author: Mary Pope Osborne My Brother’s Keeper Scholastic Incorporated, 2002 Book Summary: After being left at home Virginia Dickens experiences the bloodiest battle of the Civil War in her very own town of Gettysburg, P.A. Before Jed, her brother, left he told her to be the eyes and ears of Gettysburg so that’s what she did. She recorded everything that she saw and heard. Setting: Gettysburg, P.A, 1868 Gladys Thompson- Rock Hill, S.C- Winthrop University-2012 Objective: Students will be able to understand and know the importance of the battle at Gettysburg P.A.

In the picture you can see what the battle at Gettysburg looked like and what the soldiers may have looked like. If you were a soldier fighting in the war how would you feel ? What side would you be fighting for? And what would you own in order to take care of yourself during the war? (simulated journal)

This is a Map of the battle at Gettysburg. Using your book and the blank P.A map, that you have been given, I would like for you to re-create a similar Gettysburg map and add in significant events that happened with in our text. Such as when Jed had to leave home what part of P.A did they say he had to go to?

How would your monument look? This is a picture of the monument that was created to remember the battle of Gettysburg. People visit this monument on a daily basis to remember what happened in the battle and to celebrate the lives of the soldiers who fought. If you had the chance to recreate the monument what would yours look like? On a sheet of paper, use crayons and other creative materials, to draw your monument.

Standards South Carolina State Standard 4-6: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the causes, the course, and the effects of the American Civil War.
