When to Scan When you have a specific question or piece of information you’re looking for, When you’re scanning, you usually are looking for a specific piece of information or have a question you need answered by a piece of text. How? To scan information, look for text features that are important nouns and adjectives (content words)

When to Skim To get the gist (general idea) of written material, reading quickly (accelerated reading). Do when we don’t have a lot of time for a deeper reading but they still need to know what is being said in a particular piece of writing. How? Read first sentence and last sentence of each paragraph, or read the first paragraph and the last paragraph of a longer text.
