BTEC Creative Media Production UNIT: 2 TASK 1

Learning Intentions To understand how to Use appropriate techniques to extract relevant information from written sources. To know how to use different techniques to read information

YOUR TASK Your task is to extract information from written sources. You are designing your own game. You need to extract information from other sources that will help you with this.

WRITTEN SOURCES Books Packaging Websites Magazines Newspapers hand-outs

READING WITH CONENTRATION Reading does require concentration. If you find that you are distracted then the ability to concentrate on the text at hand will suffer. Remember, you're reading with a purpose, so focus on the purpose and the material. If you lose interest or keep losing the place, take a break or read something else. You can keep track of where you are by following along with the hand. This simple technique helps you focus and increase concentration skills.

SKIM-READING Skimming is a reading technique that can help you to: read more quickly decide if the text is interesting and whether you should read it in more detail Skimming is a fast reading technique. Use it to obtain the gist of a piece of text (i.e. to quickly identify the main ideas in the text).

SCANNING Scanning involves searching through the text looking for specific words or phrases. When you have spotted the relevant terms you can then read that section in more detail.

USING AN INDEX This is a very useful tool in print products that allows you to find where a topic in mentioned so you can go straight to the page you need.

WORD and PHRASE SEARCH These are electronic search methods. You can ‘Google’ words and phrases to find relevant websites, or use search or find commands to find specific terms used in electronic texts.

Extracting information – WRITE NOTES and SUMMARISING When you read through information writing notes can help you summarise relevant details from the information that you have found, in your own words. This can help jog your memory of why you found information that was so helpful to the topic you are doing.

Extracting information – HIGHLIGHTING TEXT and UNDERLINING Highlighting text or underlining passages in books or photocopies can help you to focus on relevant information which can then be written up into notes.

Extracting information – ANNOTATE DOCUMENTS and COPYING AND PASTING Annotate documents can help by writing next to paragraphs in books, on hand-outs etc. This will help you put into context the information you have extracted. Copy and pasting sentences can help you by taking really good information from written sources. You might want information from the internet but not save a whole page of writing so copying and pasting the part you want will help organise your work.
