➢ Time has advanced. It is now ten years later! Based on the choices you made in high school and college, you are going to work in the job you will pick from me. ➢ You may not like the job you pick, but remember, there are a lot of people in this world that do not love their jobs but still have to make a living! Let’s Pretend…

Directions ➢ Once you pick your envelope, take out the money and the card with it and set it on your desk. ➢ You will receive 2 worksheets – one with information and the other to fill out on your own. ➢ You will balance your money based on how much you are making. As we discuss each expense, put how much money you want to spend back into the envelope. ➢ We can make change if you need any.

UH OH … Unexpected Expenses… ➢ So, you’ve budgeted your money. ➢ However, life throws us unexpected expenses all of the time. ➢ You will now draw an unexpected expense from us and subtract it from your savings. Please put the money back into your envelope.

Let’s Share! ➢ Each student is going to share with the class what their job was, how much money they made, where they lived, etc. ➢ Did you live where you wanted to, drive the car you wanted to, have any kids? ➢ How did you feel while doing this activity?

Higher Education ➢ What does it take to be prepared for postsecondary/college education and work?

Higher Education ➢ There is a re many skills required for success in college and work. ➢ Higher education and employers point out the importance of workers being able to think creatively and understandably and to identify and solve problems.

Expectations are the same for both College and “good jobs” ➢ The knowledge and skills that high school graduates will need in order to be successful in college are the same as those they will need in order to be successful in a job that: ● Pays enough to support a family, with enough money. ● Provides benefits. ● Offers clear pathways for career advancement through further education and training

To be college and work ready, students need to complete a rigorous sequence of courses English- Four years of English Mathematics- Three years of mathematics, including rigorous courses in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II Natural Sciences- Three years of science, including rigorous courses in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics Social Studies- Three years of social studies Additional Courses *Some colleges and universities require other classes as prerequisites for admission, such as two or more years of the same foreign language or courses in the visual arts, music, theater, drama, dance, computer science, etc.

The highest level of math reached in high school is the strongest predictor of BA attainment – regardless of race, family income, or background!
