Now that you’re bored… Let’s talk about things you can actually use! Personal Statement Advice Liberal Arts Colleges vs. University Where to live Financial Aid Scholarships And What If Things Don’t Go As Planned

Personal Statements When applying to any college you have to turn in an application ALONG with essays Grades Activities General Information -So why write about what they’re already going to know? -This is a very common mistake!

Personal Statements When posed with a question such as, “What unique traits will you bring to _________ University?” Do not list what is already in your application! The Personal Statement is about YOU Mention an activity, but what does it mean to YOU Mention what you’ve done in school, but what does it mean to YOU Views on education have changed so much, that it is not primarily what your grades are or test scores are A big part of it is what kind of person YOU are

Personal Statements One more thing….. Please, Please, get your stuff proof read by another person. So much time to do the statement  So why have errors? Your parents, teachers, advisors should be more than willing to go over your statements with you.

Just because it quacks like a University… Liberal Arts Colleges vs. University Two types of education for a bachelors Liberal Arts Smaller (Much more intimate) Take what you want to take Often more expensive Still feels like you’re in High School (VERY SMALL CLASSES) University Larger Major system Cheaper Able to get the stereotypical “college” experience Odds are you’ll find something that interest you

Housing It is always best to get your application in ON TIME! Why?  Housing Opportunities! Commute Driving from home every morning Bad if School is >30 mins away (SoCal Traffic) Rent and Meals are “free” Appt Cheaper than the Dorms Gotta feed yourself though Short commute to campus

Housing Dorms The best way to go! Close to campus Food from residence halls Easy to meet friends that you’ll probably hang out with a lot No parental supervision

Financial Aid Many schools provide financial aid but… YOU MUST SUBMIT YOUR FAFSA! http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ The earlier this is done, the better If you are late, you will lose the money that you could have had to pay for college Call your school of interest often to check if everything is in order (I.e housing and FA)

Scholarships There is a ton of money out there But….. I have been informed that you have been educated on this www.fastweb.com Still the best way to look for a little extra money Keep in mind, some scholarships will be deducted from your financial aid (that you submitted your FAFSA on time for RIGHT!?!??!?).

Plan B

Thanks! Thanks for having us here! I promise the next time will be a lot more fun PBL’s/Case Studies Medicine Any questions?
