Finding Answers

Steps of Sci Method 1.Purpose 2.Hypothesis 3.Experiment 4.Results 5.Conclusion

Purpose  What is the problem to be solved?

Hypothesis  The predicted solution to the problem –Based on observations, research, or prior experience

Experiment  The hypothesis is tested in a controlled situation.  Experimental Group –Multiple subjects used to test the hypothesis  Control Group –Multiple subjects used to simulate normal conditions –Standard(s) for comparison

Experiment  Independent Variable –Factor that is manipulated by the experimenter  Dependent Variable –Factor that changes as result of IV manipulation –Usually recorded as the data for the experiment

Experiment  Minimize variables –Minimal difference between control and experimental groups  Repeat

Results  Data tables, Graphs, Sketches  Visual representations are helpful  Just facts, no analysis

Conclusion  Hypothesis Discussion –Does the data support the hypothesis? –If the data refutes the hypothesis, was this due to an incorrect hypothesis or experimental error?

Conclusion  Error Discussion –What experimental errors may have significantly affected your data? –In what manner did they skew your data?
