MEDIA INFLUENCES… THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF MEDIA. MEDIA CAN HAVE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE INFLUENCES, DEPENDING UPON HOW THEY ARE USED.

OTHER TYPES OF MEDIA: TELEVISION MOVIES COMPUTER INTERNET RADIO VIDEO GAMES MAGAZINES CELL PHONES WAIT! CELL PHONES??!!

CELL PHONES CAN BE RISKY IF USED IRRESPONSIBLY: Sexual messages or photos sent by cell phone SEXTING Sexting is a felony crime because it is “distribution of child pornography” because you are not adults. This is a federal crime and could lead to jail time and being labeled as sex offenders. The law requires sex offenders to register in the county in which they live. If someone asks you to send a sexual picture or message, say NO. Don’t risk your future with an irresponsible choice like sexting.

MEDIA INFLUENCE (CONT’D) Do you think that using attractive models or famous people influence people to purchase a product? If so, why? Where else do we see sexual influences used besides magazine advertisements? How can the internet be dangerous? What can you do to stay safe?

RISKY BEHAVIORS Health risk behaviors listed by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC): Not wearing seatbelts Not wearing helmets Illegal drugs/inhalants Prescription drug use Use of steroids Alcohol use Tobacco use Unhealthy eating Eating disorders Poor physical activity Tanning Bullying Fighting Carrying a weapon Suicide Sexual intercourse Dating violence Forced sex

RISKY BEHAVIORS You should always say NO to Risky Behaviors and anything that you feel is unsafe. Tomorrow we’ll learn and practice HOW to say NO.

GOAL SETTING Setting goals is important for shaping an amazing future. Risky behaviors can get in the way of reaching the goals you have set for yourself.

GOAL SETTING What are Risky Behaviors? These are things people choose to do that may harm them and affect their future goals. Ex: drugs, fighting, sex, etc. What is a goal? A goal is something that we want enough that we make an effort to reach it. Ex: good grades, making a team. It’s clear that risky behaviors could get in the way of reaching goals and having an amazing future.

GOALS: WE SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE AT LEAST ONE SHORT TERM & LONG TERM GOAL 1.Ex: “I am going to try my very best to bring all of my grades up this semester.” 2. Ex: “I want to take a babysitting class so I can start babysitting when I’m 13 and make my own money.”

LET’S SET SOME GOALS Please write one short and one long term goal. Here are some ideas, or choose your own. Discuss the questions on the next slide with a partner or small group. GOALS: POSSIBLE GOALS: ~Earn better grades ~Get along better with family ~Choose better friends ~Join a school club ~Earn more freedom from parents ~Join a sports team ~Improve communication skills ~Become more confident ~Avoid trouble POSSIBLE CAREERS: ~Singer/Actor~Construction Worker ~Teacher/Coach~Doctor/Nurse ~Hair Stylist~Electrician/Plumber ~Computer Tech~Veterinarian ~Graphics Designer ~Lawyer/Paralegal ~Business Owner~Firefighter

TODAY’S TAKE AWAY: TO SHAPE A GREAT FUTURE… SET, PLAN, AND GO AFTER YOUR GOALS! BE WISE HOW YOU USE VARIOUS MEDIA AVOID RISKY BEHAVIORS

GOAL SETTING With a Partner or Small Group: Answer these questions and be ready to share your thoughts. 1.What steps can I start taking today toward these goals? 2.If a career goal: what kind of grades and education will I need in high school and college? What can I do today? 3.What could keep me from reaching these goals? 4.Who in my life can I ask for help to achieve my goals? Hint: who meets your human needs? (Security, Connection, Purpose, Support, Contribution)
