Context Our direction going forward is driven by the Melbourne Declaration and the National Curriculum… …and also sits within the context of current frameworks: The Effective Schools Model An EMR School Improvement Framework for Regional Network Leaders The Developmental Learning Framework for School Leaders EMR Forward Directions

Educating the Whole Child Why this direction?

Educating the Whole Child The underpinning theory of action If we offer breadth and depth of education through personalised learning experiences then we will make positive progress towards realising the potential of every student and in preparing them to take their place in the world as active and informed global citizens.

Educating the Whole Child Outcomes for this Forward Direction: 1.Students’ talents, strengths and aspirations are identified, nurtured and celebrated. 2.Students are cognitively engaged through access to personalised learning. 3.Students have access to a range of rich and authentic learning opportunities within and across schools.

Educating the Whole Child Outcomes for this Forward Direction: 4.Schools develop and implement a broad curriculum with a global perspective. 5.Principals, as instructional leaders, have the commitment, capacity and opportunity to establish the conditions under which high quality learning and teaching of the whole child can take place.

Educating the Whole Child Sample Professional Learning Opportunities Student and school success stories captured and shared. Diversity of student talents and strengths showcased. Build principals’ capacity to engage with futures-thinking and innovation. Effective practice schools share strategies for provision of learning opportunities across schools and networks. Network and regional conferences that focus on personalising learning.

Educating the Whole Child Sample Professional Learning Opportunities Build schools’ connections and partnerships at network, regional and international level. Support curriculum planning to develop global and digital student competencies. Promote Asia literacy and increase uptake in Asian languages.

Why this direction?

The underpinning theory of action If we: are all clear about the specific literacy and numeracy outcomes we expect; identify together key improvement strategies that schools can implement to achieve them; enhance the level of principals’ instructional leadership; provide principals with relevant and necessary support; work within established accountability frameworks to demonstrate improvement then this will lead to improved student achievement in literacy and numeracy.

Outcomes for this Forward Direction: 1.Higher levels of student engagement with and in literacy and numeracy learning. 2.Increased levels of effective and purposeful teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy.

Outcomes for this Forward Direction: 3.Greater consistency in the quality of literacy and numeracy teaching. 4.Principals, as instructional leaders, have the commitment, capacity and opportunity to establish the conditions under which high quality teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy can take place.

Sample Professional Learning Opportunities Professional learning opportunities that will build teacher capacity to: select and use appropriate intervention strategies teach to the student’s point of learning. Support to use Transition to School Statements to inform differentiated instructional practice from Year Prep. Support to develop and use ILIPs for identified students.

Sample Professional Learning Opportunities Support to embed literacy and numeracy into all curriculum areas and all areas of inquiry. Support to use assessment schedule and data plans to identify and track individual students by name in the bottom two NAPLAN bands. Primary and secondary schools supported to implement the 6 – 18 month Literacy and Numeracy Strategy.

Why this direction? Rich Open ended Authentic Differentiated Future focused Developmentally appropriate

The underpinning theory of action If we enhance the capacity of EMR schools to meet the needs of today’s learners by improving the quality of teacher practice – based on a common understanding of what effective teaching and learning is – then student performance and preparedness for life after school will improve.

Outcomes for this Forward Direction: 1.High quality, differentiated teaching practices are applied consistently within and across EMR schools. 2.Effective teaching practice is happening within and across schools.

Outcomes for this Forward Direction: 3.Improved student engagement and retention in EMR schools. 4.Shared understandings and a common language about student learning and teacher practice.

Outcomes for this Forward Direction: 5.A cycle of continuous improvement is embedded in all schools. 6.Principals, as instructional leaders, have the commitment, capacity and opportunity to establish the conditions under which high quality teaching and learning can take place.

Sample Professional Learning Opportunities Effective practice schools share strategies for implementing high quality teaching across the region. Network and regional conferences that focus on effective practice, instructional leadership and engagement with research and provide an opportunity to establish a common language. Instructional models implemented.

Sample Professional Learning Opportunities Teacher forums and networks that focus on and share quality teaching. Principal and leadership team professional learning programs that focus on quality teaching and learning. A suite of EMR professional learning opportunities, including instructional rounds and coaching. Support to use high quality processes to select principals, assistant principals, leadership team members and teachers.
