The Memorial Union has a list of 32+ services that are offered. From a browsing Library and Chapel to a Hotel, you can find almost everything. If you happen to be bored one night and feel like going out, the Memorial Union offers a Bowling Alley and game rooms. The Memorial Union is located on the South side of the Iowa State University campus. It was built in 1928, in remembrance to those who had lost their lives in World War I. A group of supporting students rallied for a living memorial because they said that a building could serve to the college and preserve the memory of those who were left. Apart from being a landmark of ISU, it also has become the center of attraction to all students and visitors. Overall the mission of the Memorial Union is to nurture common ground, enrich and sustain individual lives and to remember. Finally, the Memorial Union values: Participation, experience, service Social interaction, partnerships Comfort, traditions, memories Celebration, kindness and friendships Traditions/Myths _____________________________________ One of the most known traditions/myths is the Zodiac located in the North entry of the Memorial Union. The Zodiac are ancient symbols placed on the floor around a circle, which was built in the 1920s. The symbols were proud foot planned, and were lifted off the floor so eventually with students stepping on them it would lead to the symbols to wear down to the same level as the floor. But in 1929, ISU students decided that if you stepped on the Zodiac, it was very unlucky and you would fail your next exam. To this day, the Zodiac symbols remain raised from the floor. It is said by students at ISU if you accidently invoke the curse of walking on a symbol, you can throw a coin in the fountain to take it away.
