The Meiling Scenic Area in the Xinan District of Tainan City is situated between 500 – 1100 meters above sea level. The area was initially involved in banana cultivation, and so it was called the Banana Mountain. At the time, Administrator Shibukawa observed the area and deemed the environment to be suitable for the growth of plums, and he thus began to encourage the residence to cultivate plum trees. By around the 1960s, plum trees had replaced banana tress as the primary agricultural product. Due to the mild weather, the plum trees are well-grown, and the Meiling became widely known the beauty of its plum blossoms, which served as an all-year-round tourist attraction. It also has a rich ecology and landscape scenery, and is well-established in tourism development. It is now a renowned scenic spot in the south, populated by visitors throughout the year.

Other than the plum flowers in January, and plum harvests from March to April serving as Meiling’s main selling-point in tourism, it also has fireflies from April to May, wild lilies from July to August, special sceneries like the Lieyingjian Sky- Line and Meifong Ancient Trail, Eastern Brown Crow Valley, and a variety of rich ecological resources. Fireflies are extremely popular among all other attractions, and may number up to 100,000, grabbing the attention of any visitor. The adult Luciola hydrophila appears from early April to mid May each year. The wild lily season in July and August provide the tourists with the best place to enjoy flowers for visitors in hot summers. Follow the trail up the mountain, search for the fireflies, and experience the gorgeous view of fireflies flying through the mountain like a rain of stars.

The Mei Peak Ancient Trail is sometimes referred to as a small Yangmingshan due to its flower blossoms in all seasons. The Trail was the most valuable route in Meiling in terms of diverse scenery in Meiling as a part of the Siraya National Scenic Area. Exploring the Mei Peak Ancient Trail can challenge your strength when climbing the Lieyingjian Sky- Line. The total length of the Mei Peak Ancient Trail is approximately 2.5 km, and takes about 2 hours on a round trip.
