ELA MULTI-SKILL ACTIVITY PRESENTATION BY CAROLYN SMITH Analyzing the Albatross: Coleridge vs Bastille

CONTEXT 10 th grade Character and theme analysis of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner through the lens of Bastille’s song Weight of Living, Pt. I Students have read The Rime of the Ancient Mariner in its completion for homework the night before.

ACTIVITY Discussing the main themes in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Listening to Weight of Living, Pt. I by Bastille Writing a quick response to how the two texts are connected Discussing in small groups their ideas about how the song develops the theme of the poem and also the Mariner’s character. Presenting to the class the conclusions made within their groups.

ACTIVITY SAMPLE While Weight of Living, Pt. I is being played, follow along with the lyrics printed on your handout. Make notes of what the artist is trying to say in his song about the Mariner’s situation and his relationship with the Albatross.  Feel free to use textual support from the sections of the poem I’ve pulled out, which are also on your handout. Discuss with a partner what you’ve discovered while comparing these two works.
