What is a Student Union?

A Union is the campus living room –A place where students can come together Share Ideas Meet New People Eat Lounge Around Play Games Join Clubs See Movies Get the most from their college experience

Why are Student Unions Important?

Why are Unions Important? College Unions are important to college life in two major aspects First, they provide: –An outlet to get away from classes –Have fun in a safe environment

Why are Unions Important? Secondly Unions provide opportunities for students to: –Work –Volunteer –Start their own Organizations

Why are Unions Important? Unions can be seen as giant workshops at which students can take the ideas and theories they are learning in the classrooms and apply them to practical situations

Why are Unions Important? Unions give students the ability to develop many skills such as: –Leadership –Customer Service –Event planning –Event Management –Supervision –Time Management –Conflict Resolution

Who Runs this Place?

Who Runs This Place? It is important to understand that The Oglesby Union is part of a larger organization. Florida State University is a nationally recognized research institution. As both a student and an employee of FSU, you are part of the larger organization as well.

Who runs this place? The Oglesby Union is part of the Division of Student Affairs The DSA is run by the Vice President for Student Affairs who oversees the strategic plan for all of the departments in the division.

Who Runs this Place? The DSA also includes: –Campus Recreation –The Career Center –C.A.R.E. –The Center for Leadership and Civic Ed. –The Communications Office, –The Dean of Students –The International Center –The Office of Multicultural Affairs –The Office of Research –Student Government –Thagard Health Center –The Counseling Center –University Housing

Who runs this place? The Union is run by the Union Director He reports directly to the Vice President Sets strategic plan for the Union

There are currently 2 Associate Directors that set the strategic tone for their areas. Associate Director of Operations Associate Director of Research and Communications

Under the Associate Directors there are department Directors that manage the day to day activities of their departments. These Directors are: Director of Guest Services Director of Operations

Director of Crenshaw Lanes Director of the Askew Student Life Center Director of the Art Center Director of the Flying High Circus Director of Marketing and Communications Director of Student Activities

Why Do Unions Hire Students?

Why do Unions Hire Students? Students are a vital part of how the Oglesby Union is run. Without student employees, the Union would not function like it does. The Union employs more students than any other department within Student Affairs.

Why do Unions Hire Students? Students give a student face to the Union –They reinforce the fact that the union is for students, by students. Student employees give Union Administration direct access to the Student Perspective

What do Unions offer students?

What do Unions Offer Students? Tangible things include: –Money –A flexible work schedule –A convenient place to work –10% Bookstore discount

What do Unions Offer Students? Intangible things include: –Ability to affect policy and procedural changes –Gain a wide variety of skills that can be used in their careers Leadership Customer Service Conflict Resolution Etc.

What do Unions Offer Students? More Intangible items include: –Direct Access to programs within the Union –Ability to meet various artists and talents that perform in the Union –See Advanced screenings of movies that are yet to be nationally released –Help plan large events such as Pow Wow and Homecoming and choose the acts that perform at those events –Make memories that will last a lifetime
