Welcome to the First Design Meeting of the Year!

Something to Ponder…… “All students have motives, so it is a mistake to speak of students as being unmotivated.”

Introducing……. The Design Seuss Case!

Purpose for Today: How do I figure out what kind of work my students want to do?

Three Effective Ways: 1. Ask them! Use guided questions to learn more about what kind of work your students prefer (Best in small groups!) 2. Surveys--great for seeing the big picture. 3. Try new things and ask what they think!

Asking the right questions…… Don’t ask: What is the best part of your day? (Recess!!!) Ask: Tell me about a time when learning something was really fun for you. Why do you think you learned so much? What made it fun for you?

Surveys Can gather great information from surveys…….. Ex: 92% of our 80 3rd Grade students want choice in their work. Ex: 91% of our students want to learn new information from interesting videos or clips. Ex: 49% of our 3rd Grade students like to “show off” their work.

Try new things! Give them new ways of getting work done. Then ask them about it! Example: Give your students choice by using a menu for their work. After a few days, ask them what they think. What do they like about it? What do they dislike about it?

First comes TRUST! Students will not give you good feedback if they don’t trust you or have a positive relationship with you. This must come first when attempting to engage students in their work!

Mission for next week…… Gather data about how your students want to work this year. Bring raw data next Friday morning. We will be creating WHO Charts at next Friday’s Design meeting.
