1.  If you missed the compare/contrast test yesterday, you must come in after school THIS WEEK to complete this. Plan on about 45 for the test.  One-pagers are due by Friday, March 1. I will not accept any one-pagers after this date.  I will also collect my books starting Monday, March 4. No, you can’t keep it. If I get you back next trimester, you may check it out again, though.  All makeup work (quizzes, tests, etc) must by made up by Friday, March 1 to get credit for my class.

2.  You must be here the day of finals to get credit for this assignment.  Today you will choose your groups and begin work on the script. Be creative! I have had music videos all the way to musicals!  On Friday, you will have a “timed” writing in which you will write your individual character analysis. This will be a summative grade. Use these next few days to get prepared for it.

3.  After forming groups, decide who will play what roles. You may modernize this play or keep it close to the original.** Whatever you decide, you must decide how you will portray your character(s). What will be the purpose of your play? (Think about how different Othello and O were).  Using your book and your notes, go through EACH ACT AND SCENE of the play. Decide what you will CUT and what you will KEEP. Why will you keep what you keep? Why will you cut what you cut? (CEW…this will be important for Friday).  **Every character must include important lines from EACH scene you keep. What lines define your character? Why and how? (CEW) This is the ONLY part that has to be in Shakespearean language. The rest of the script can be modernized.  Everyone MUST fill out the chart. EVERYONE must be done with the chart to get on a computer tomorrow to begin your script!  You will begin work on scripts once this is done!  The only way you can screw up the chart is by leaving it blank. Fill it out completely with information you will need to create your script!

4.  You will piece together a character monologue for Iago, Othello or Desdemona. Decide which one.  You must go through EACH act and scene and decide what to keep and what to cut. You must decide how you want to portray this character to an audience. What will be his/her range of emotions throughout the speech?  You can write a modern monologue, but must include at least 6-10 lines from the original play in your monologue. You will explain why you made the choices you did on Friday.

5.  Once you are done with your chart, you may start writing the script.  Remember you may modernize the language, but for EVERY scene, EVERY character must have ORIGINAL lines from the play that best represent the purpose of your character.  Every member of the group must contribute and have a copy (I would work on Google Docs; share with me and your group members). You must print a final version for me.

6.  At the top of your script include the following: ◦ Setting and time period of your story ◦ What is the context of your performance? What are you hoping to accomplish with your retelling? (Should be about a paragraph.) ◦ A list of characters and who is playing who? ◦ After each character, a brief description of the character’s purpose and motivation. If you changed the original name, what is it now. ◦ Label each Act and Scene ◦ BOLD original lines from the play for every character ◦ Include scene changes and other descriptive information as needed. ◦ Keep language school appropriate! Shakespeare insults, anyone?

7.  These need to be school appropriate if you are doing a live performance.  Who will bring what? Don’t spend money on this project. What do you have that you can use at home?  You need to practice. You can make use of guided study.

8. You will have your timed writing in class Friday. If you are absent, you will have to come in after school to complete this BEFORE your final performance. You should have rec’d the study questions. You may bring whatever notes you need. You will type your essay in class. You will have ONE class period to complete it. Come prepared.
