Calculating Energy Use and Converting Units Chapter 2

The following formula based on the cancellation of units is useful: Given Value x Conversion factor =Answer 1 OR old unit x new unit = new unit 1 old unit Example: 25 ft x 1 yd x m = meters 3 ft 1 yd

Your electricity bill shows that you use 600 kWh of electricity each month. Your refrigerator, which is 15 years old, could be responsible for up to 25% of this electricity consumption. Newer refrigerators are more efficient, meaning that they use less energy to do the same amount of work. If you wish to conserve electrical energy and save money, should you replace your refrigerator? How can you compare the energy efficiency of your old refrigerator with that of the more efficient new models?

Your refrigerator uses 500 watts when the motor is running. The motor runs for about 30 minutes per hour (or a total of 12 hours per day). How much energy does your refrigerator use per year? 500 watts =.5 kilo-watts 0.5kW X 12 hours = 6 kWh day day 6kWh X 365 day = 2,190kWh day 1 year year

How much more efficient is the best new refrigerator compared with your older model? The best new model uses 400kWh per year. Your refrigerator uses 2,190 kWh per year. 2,190 kWh/year – 400kWh/year = 1,790 kWh/year
