LANs, WANs and MANs

LAN WAN LANs vs. WANs (Video) Examples WLAN MANEPN

LAN (Local Area Connection) O A local area network (LAN) is a network that connects computers and devices in a limited geographical area such as home, school, office building.

Examples on LAN O Personal area network (PAN) : is a network used for communication among one computer and different information technological devices close to one person like the printer. O Home area network (HAN) : is a residential LAN which is used for communication between digital devices typically deployed in the home, usually a small number of personal computers, such as printers. An important function is the sharing of Internet access.

WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) O A type of local-area network that uses high- frequency radio waves rather than wires to communicat e between nodes.

WAN (Wide Area Network) O Is a network that covers a large geographic area such as a city, country, or intercontinental distances, using a communications channel that combines many types of media such as telephone lines, cables, and air waves.

Examples on WAN O Metropolitan area network (MAN) : is a large network that usually spans a city. Sample EPN made of Frame relay WAN connections. Sample VPN used to interconnect three offices together.

Other Examples on WAN O Enterprise private network : is a network build by an enterprise to interconnect various company sites, production sites, head offices, remote offices, shops, in order to share computer resources.
