2 Network Types Network Type Description Where used in Business
PAN (Personal Area Network) Devices used by one person connected via wireless media. Usually by employees traveling on business. LAN (Local Area Network) A networking consisting of nodes covering a small geographic area. In small businesses of self-contained units of a large business (such as one or more floors of the same office building) HAN (Home Area Network) A type of small LAN installed in a home Not usually deployed by businesses, except small home-based businesses WAN (Wide Area Network) Two or more LANs connected together, often over long distances Connecting business LANs over long distances such as between branches in two cities MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) WANs constructed by municipalities to provide connectivity in a specific geographic area Although not developed by businesses, employees often use them while traveling

3 VPNs Virtual Private Network Uses the public internet communications infrastructure to build a secure, private network among various locations. Main technology for achieving a VPN is called tunneling Tunneling- data pockets are placed inside other data pockets Format of the external data pockets is encrypted and can be understood only by sending and receiving hardware, known as tunnel interface

4 Print Servers Manage all printing jobs for client computers
How does a print server function? How does the printer know which documents to print? Print servers manage all client- required printing jobs all printers on a network. A print queue (print spooler) is a software holding area for print jobs.

5 Application Servers An application server acts as a repository for application software.

6 Database Servers Provide client computers with database

7 Authentication Servers
Keep track of users logged onto the network

8 Filer Servers Store and manage files for network users

9 E- Mail Servers Process and deliver incoming and outgoing

10 Communication Servers
Handle all communications between the network and other networks

11 Web/ Cloud Servers Host websites to make them available through the Internet
