A. BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Outline Task description Cable concept Tests of prototype cables Assembly and test of 20 m long link Cabling activity Preparation of test station Conclusions

A. BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Task 7.5: High-Tc link Deliverable of Task 5 - as described in the Eucard Grant Agreement: Superconducting link, 20 m long, containing 48 HTS cables rated at 600 A- DC (M40). The Task includes design and assembly activities – but not the test of the final prototype. CERN will perform the test of the prototype link.

A. BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Application to LHC

A. BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Novel cable concept “Twisted Pair” optimized for use of tape conductors (MgB 2, Y-123 and Bi-223). Three HTS tapes per cable A A 4 mm 1 mm Cable Concept (1/2)

A. BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Cable/link Concept (2/2) 24 × 2 × 600 A Multi-cable assemblyLink: multi-cable assembly in cryostat

A. BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Prototype twisted-pair cables characterization (CERN and SOTON) Type-5: MgB2 Type-3: Y-123 Type-2: Bi-2223 Type-1: Bi-2223 NB The Ic in the plot refers to one single cable of the twisted pair unit  Measurement performed on twisted-pair cables made from different conductors (2 m long)  No cabling degradation observed (< 2 %)  Good homogeneity of Ic of cables in the same in the same twisted pare (  2 %) Self-field 2×4.4 kA !

A. BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 On-going activities 1)Design of cabling machine for controlled assembly of 20 m long cable of link at CERN 2)Construction at CERN of a test station for the test of prototype link 3)Upgrade of DAQ at the University of Southampton for the test of 5 m long prototype links assembled at CERN

A. BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Cabling machines (1/2)  Static machine for the assembly of insulated stacks of HTS conductor  (single cable of the twisted pair units)  Status: completely assembled. It is being commissioned in these days

A. BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Cabling machines (2/2)  Rotating machine for the twisting of insulated cables (output: twisted pairs)  Status: design completed. Components are being manufactured in these days. Commissioning is planned in early summer 2012

A. BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Integration of 5 m long link at SOTON Test of complete 5 m long prototype link at SOTON in autumn 2012

A. BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Test station at CERN (1/3) Nexan Cryoflex® line (20 m long cryostat of link) procured and installed in the CERN SM-18 laboratory

A. BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Test station at CERN (3/3) Full test station designed, parts being manufactured. Cryostat with current leads completed. Last mechanical components being manufactured Imax = 20 kA Temperature range = 5 K to 70 K (He gas cooling)

A. BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Is the Task 7.5 on schedule ? Yes Assembly of prototype link: planned to be ready by Q The cabling machines are planned to be fully commissioned by end of summer 2012, when cabling of 20 m long HTS cables will start.

A. BallarinoEucard, 8 th WP7 HFM Annual MeetingWarsaw,24/04/2012 Conclusions  The new cable concept has been validated with test of several prototype cables made from MgB 2, Y-123 and Bi-2223 conductors. Tests were made at LN 2 and LHe temperature, and in GHe in a variable temperature range  Cabling machines are being constructed for the assembly of the twisted-pair cables required for the 20 m long prototype link  The work is advancing according to schedule and the deliverable of the Task 7.5 (20 m long prototype link) is expected to ready according to original plan
