A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 High-Tc Superconducting Link Status of Task 7.5 FP7 Meeting at LASA-Milano A.Ballarino, CERN for the Task 7.5 Collaboration CERN, Bruker, Columbus, University of Southampton LASA, 18-09-2012

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Outline Task description Cable concept Progress since last meeting (April 2012): Cabling machines Test station Status of activity vs final deliverable Conclusions

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Task 7.5: High-Tc link Deliverable of Task 5 - as described in the Eucard Grant Agreement: Superconducting link, 20 m long, containing 48 HTS cables rated at 600 A - DC.The Task includes design and assembly activities – but not the test of the final prototype The final application for LHC (P7) consists of two superconducting links, each about 500 m long, with the same configuration of the prototype CERN will test the 20 m long prototype in nominal operating conditions

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Cable concept Elaboration of a cable concept that enables the use of pre-reacted superconductors available in the form of tape: MgB 2, YBCO and BSCCO 2223 The HTS cable design adopted for power transmission lines appeared not to be suitable for this specific application - few tapes and many cables in the same cryogenic envelope

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Three HTS tapes per cable interleaved with copper strips + 600 A - 600 A 4 mm 1 mm Cable Concept

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Cable/Link Concept (2/2) 24 × 2 × 600 A Multi-cable assembly Link: multi-cable assembly in cryostat  2 kg/m  200 m HTS /m cable

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Prototype twisted-pair cables characterization (CERN and SOTON) Type-5: MgB2 Type-3: Y-123 Type-2: Bi-2223 Type-1: Bi-2223 NB The Ic in the plot refers to one single cable of the twisted pair unit  Measurement performed on twisted-pair cables made from different conductors  No cabling degradation observed (< 2 %)  Good homogeneity of Ic of cables in the same in the same twisted pair (  2 %) Self-field, Length of cables = 2 m 2×4.4 kA !

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Cabling machine (1/2) For the controlled assembly of long cables a dedicated cabling machine has been designed, assembled and fully commissioned at CERN

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Cabling machine (2/2) Rotating machine for the twisting of insulated cables Design and assembly completed. To be commissioned in October 2012.

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Test station

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Test Station – SM 18 CERN laboratory Refrigerator: 6 kW @ 4.5 K (18 kW for test of LHC magnets) 25 000 LHe Dewar

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Test Station @ CERN: Conceptual Design RT LHe 4.5 K GHe Tv m ≤ 10 g/s 5 K ≤ Tv ≤ 70 K Vacuum Insulation LHe, 4.5 K GHe Instrumentation DAQ Quench Protection

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Test Station @ CERN

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Test Station @ CERN

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Test station at CERN  The two cryostats are fully assembled  The cryostat with the leads has been commissioned – pressure and leak tested, cooled-down to nominal conditions, operated at some 3.5 kA and warmed up  The cryostat of the superconducting link was successfully leak tested last week, and it will be pressure tested this week  The connection of the two cryostats is planned to take place this month. A first cool-down, with a 20 m long twisted pair YBCO cable already integrated the in cryostat of the superconducting link, is planned to take place in October 2012

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Status of activity vs final deliverable  The 20 m long semi-flexible cryostat with a supporting system and purpose-built terminations, is available today at CERN  A 20 m long 48 HTS cable assembly can be ready by end 2012 – when also the rotating cabling machine will have been commissioned This two components make the superconducting link which is the deliverable of the Task 7.5 In addition:  By the end of the year, the test station will have been fully commissioned and 20 m long cables will have been tested in He gas in a variable temperature range. The test of a 20 m long prototype will follow

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Is the Task 7.5 on schedule ? Yes Assembly of prototype link: planned to be ready by end 2012.

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Conclusions  A new cable concept has been proposed. Validation of the proposed twisted-pair concept was done with the assembly and characterization of short prototype MgB 2, YBCO and BSCCO 2223 cables  Two cabling machines have been designed and constructed for the controlled cabling of the 20 m long HTS twisted-pair cables  A new test station has been constructed at CERN for the test of the 20 m long prototype link  The task is on schedule – a full prototype is planned to be available by end 2012. The test in nominal operating conditions will follow. Single twisted-pair cables, 20 m long, will be measured this year

A. BallarinoLASA, Milano,18/09/2012 Thanks for your attention !
