Digital Libraries: Linked Open Data (LOD).. what comes next

Transformation of Digital Library in Libraries Ora Zehavi

Libraries… Librarians  With their expertise in search, metadata generation, collection development librarians should actually be well positioned to understand and implement linked data.  With developments of Resource Description & Access (RDA), Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), and Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD) standards libraries are now in the transition towards linked data

 Linked Data is about using the Web to connect related data that wasn't previously linked, or using the Web to lower the barriers to linking data currently linked using other methods

Libraries & Linked data  Linked Open Data is a way of publishing structured data that allows metadata to be connected and enriched, so that different representations of the same content can be found, and links made between related resources  Linked data represents a major opportunity for libraries to integrate information resources with the wider web.  It provides a foundation for better data management, allowing libraries to store, share and re-use data as needed

Changes  All kind of Data, Open Data  Discovery and Delivery solution  Mega-aggregation of hundreds of millions of scholarly e-resources  Linkage,  Shared Metadata  Multilingual

 The era of Google  Cloud  Traffic  Hidden information & databases  Web-based, Open interfaces  Devises.. IPhone… E-readers

Academic libraries in Israel  Gateway to Knowledge  Integration from many sources (not only in the library collection  All kind of materials  One search-Google like  Retrieve information in Hebrew  Relevant and Precision

Future  With so many rapid changes occurring in technology and social media, librarians need to maintain their role as technology leaders more than ever  Economics, not technology, is (or will be) driving the need for fundamental changes in our universities and in our libraries

In This session: Israeli bibliographic data and the international scene Prof. Elhanan Adler, National Library of Israel and David Yellin College Discovery Tools in Academic Libraries: why, what and how? Edith Falk, Chief Librarian, Hebrew University of Jerusalem Hebrew University Libraries Authority.
