Module I – What did they say?

Module I Objectives To understand how important effective communication is between the leaders and young people in their section. To have effective listening skills To understand how effective communications can be established. To understand the decision making structure within their section. To understand how Young Leaders can take part in programme planning forums.

Communication It’s a matter of perspective

Your turn Divide into groups of two or three and discuss over the next 5 minutes…. It is important to take the views of your section members into consideration when running the section. Why?

What did you get? Keep them happy Have more programme ideas A sense of ownership To make the young people feel involved To make the leaders life easier To have no ‘them’ and ‘us’ Cover different interests

Are you listening, I shall say this only once? Turn your chairs around and no peeking……

News Reporter John Simpson, under attack

Something to think about? What has just happened? Where were they? How many ended up being shot at? What were the trying to do? Who started shooting at them? What was the reporters name? Now watch again……

The “Goldfish Bowl!” 4 willing volunteers! Someone to chair the meeting Someone to say nothing and look very bored. Someone to be frustrated that they’re not being listened to. Someone who can’t stop talking and interrupts everyone else. Hold a meeting forum discussing what activities Members would like to see in the next session.

So what did you see? Was the meeting effective? Was everyone’s voice being heard? Why was someone getting upset? What were the trying to do? Did everyone have respect for each other? How could this meeting be made to work?

So what about your section? Using the Programme resources, how can you help ensure everyone has a say and has their opinion heard?

Module I Objectives – Have we achieved them? To understand how important effective communication is between the leaders and young people in their section. To have effective listening skills To understand how effective communications can be established. To understand the decision making structure within their section. To understand how Young Leaders can take part in programme planning forums.

Hope you weren’t to bored ;) That’s it – Your Done
