Presentation transcript:

Jeremiah’s Message of Hope Jeremiah 30-33 Contains a Promise of Restoration: Jer. 29:10-11: “This is what the Lord says, ‘When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my gracious promise to bring you back to this place. For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” “70 Years” - (Jer. 25:11,12; 2 Chron. 36:21; Dan. 9:2; Zech. 1:12)

Jeremiah’s Message of Hope Many Messianic Implications of Jeremiah 30-33, But Includes Physical Promises: Jer. 30:10: “So do not fear, O Jacob my servant: do not be dismayed, O Israel, declares the Lord. I will surely save you out of a distant place, your descendants from the land of their exile. Jacob will again have peace and security and no one will make him afraid.” “Exile” Had Real Meaning to Jeremiah’s Audience! (look for dual-applications)

Jeremiah’s Message of Hope Physical Promises… Jer. 30:3: “The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will bring my people Israel and Judah back from captivity and restore them to the land I gave their forefathers to possess, declares the Lord.” “I will restore the fortunes of Jacob’s tents and have compassion on his dwellings… the city will be rebuilt…” (Jer. 30:18)

Jeremiah’s Message of Hope Fulfilled At Cyrus’ Decree – 2 Chron. 36:22: “Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying, ‘Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the Lord God of heaven given me; and

Jeremiah’s Message of Hope Fulfilled At Cyrus’ Decree – 2 Chron. 36:22: “he hath charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among all his people? The Lord his God be with him, and let him go up.” Ezra Opens With An Explanation “that the word of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia… (Ezra 1:1-2)

Jeremiah’s Message of Hope Fulfilled Under 3 Returns: 1st Group: Zerubbabel (538 BC) (Temple Rebuilt (Ezra 6:15, 516 BC), Haggai and Zechariah the Prophets) 2nd Group: Ezra (458 BC) (Ezra 7) 3rd Group: Nehemiah (444 BC) (Nehemiah 2) City Walls Rebuilt (Neh. 6:15) Malachi, the Prophet

Jeremiah’s Message of Hope Many Prophecies Had Both Lesser and Greater; Nearer and Farther Fulfillments Imminent Fulfillment of Short-Range Prophecies Would Aid People In Considering Long-Range Antitypical and Spiritual Fulfillments

Jeremiah’s Message of Hope “Voice in Ramah… Rachel Weeping for Her Children” Jer. 31:15 Youth Deaths by Babylonians “Voice in Ramah… Rachel Weeping for Her Children” Matt. 2:16-18 Herod’s Slaughter of (male) Children (2 and younger)

Jeremiah’s Message of Hope Jacob To Be “Saved” Jer. 30:7 From Exile Israel: From Where Scattered by Assyrians Judah: From Babylonia Jacob To Be “Saved” Rom. 11:26 From Sin Paul Immediately Quotes (v. 27) From Jeremiah 31:31-34

Jeremiah’s Message of Hope “Yoke” to be “Broken Off” Jer. 30:8 Israel Yoked By Assyrians Judah Yoked By Babylon (Jer. 27:2; 28:14) Israel to be Ruled, Not by Foreigners, But by “David, their King” Reign of Christ: (Ps. 2:6; Isa. 9:7; Lk. 1:32-33; Acts 2:30; 13:23)

Jeremiah’s Message of Hope “Their leader will be one of their own; their ruler will arise from among them…” Jer. 30:21 Zerubbabel? Nehemiah? CHRIST Deut. 18:15, 18 + Acts 3:22,23; Gen. 49:10; Micah 5:2; Isa. 9:6, 7; Rom. 9:5 “I will bring him near and he will come close to me” (Heb. 10:19-22)

Jeremiah’s Message of Hope The “Righteous Branch” (Jer. 33:15-17) : “In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’ For thus says the Lord: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel.” (But 22:30?)

Jeremiah’s Message of Hope The People Were Punished Because Their “guilt is so great and your sins are so many” - Jer. 30:14, 15: Jer. 30:11 - “I am with you and will save you, declares the Lord. Though I completely destroy all the nations among which I scatter you, I will not completely destroy you. I will discipline you, but only with justice; I will not let you go entirely unpunished.” God’s Justice Also To RESTORE

Jeremiah’s Message of Hope Ultimate Restoration Accomplished Only Through Redemption Their “Sins” Were “Many” - Forgiveness Their Only Hope - Jer. 31:31-34: Jer. 31:31-34 - “The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because…

Jeremiah’s Message of Hope They broke my covenant though I was a husband to them. This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God and they shall be my people. No longer will a man teach his neighbor or a man his brother saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, for I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

Jeremiah’s Message of Hope Jeremiah 31:31-34 Quoted in Hebrews 8:8-12 & Partially in Hebrews 10:16, 17 Explained By The Establishment of the New Covenant Hebrews 8:13 - “In that he says, ‘a new covenant,’ he has made the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.”
