Project 2. Early Presidents and Executive Branch Job Interview For your Unit 4 assessment, Mr. Litz will interview you on the following topics: Powers of the President (Commander in Chief, Chief Legislator, Chief Diplomat, Chief Executive) President Washington’s impact on the Executive Branch (Whiskey Rebellion, Neutrality, Precedents) President Adam’s impact on the Executive Branch (XYZ Affair, Neutrality, Alien and Sedition Acts) Your interview grade will be based on: Speaking/ Posture, Understanding of the President’s Powers, and Understanding of President Washington/ Adams’ impact on the Executive Branch. Overall, we want to answer this question through our studies: How did George Washington and John Adams give meaning to the powers of the Presidency?

The Possible Questions There are seven possible questions. You will narrow that list of seven to five final questions. I will ask you four of the possible five questions and score you on your responses, posture, and eye contact. President: Review the questions with the class and make a choice on the questions in green.

Here are SEVEN POTENTIAL Questions: Q: What is the power of Commander in Chief? Why did Washington have to use this power and how did he as First President? Q: President Washington and President Adams both acted as Chief Diplomats. What does it mean to be Chief Diplomat and what precedents did they set for others to follow? OR Q: Tell me about a time when President Washington or Adams had to create a foreign policy. What issue were they facing and what was the outcome of that issue? Q: Being Chief Legislator takes on many roles. What can the President do in this role? How did President Washington and Adams act in this role? (1 example each) Project 2. Early Presidents and Executive Branch Job Interview

Q: What does it mean to be Chief Executive? What are some examples of a President acting in this role? OR Q: What does it mean to be Chief Executive? Provide two examples of Cabinet members and how they help the President. I will ask you this: Q: How did Presidents Washington and Adams give meaning to the powers of the Presidency? (How did they show other Presidents what they can do (Precedents!) Project 2. Early Presidents and Executive Branch Job Interview

Interview Preparation 1.You are allowed to have two note cards with you during the interview. 1.You have the remainder of the period to prepare your responses to the five possible questions. 1.I recommend writing a normal size on the lines, using the front and back of cards and labeling your answers. Highlighters are near the windows.

Example of Note Card Preparation What does it mean to be Chief Diplomat? Provide an example of the President acting as one. Chief Diplomat is when the President… ●Decides foreign policy or how we act with other countries.
