TExES Ten keys to guide you [Shared by Dr. Kathy Spencer, Principal of Star Point School, Texas Christian University]
I. Technology Texas loves technology. Always consider a choice with technology.
II. Touchy-Feely Texas likes WARM FUZZIES. Always consider a choice when the teacher goes out of his/her way to engage a child or the family.
III. Piaget Texas LOVES Piaget. Always consider an answer that uses Piagetian language, i.e., developmentally appropriate, concrete, abstract, etc.
IV. Behaviorism Texas will not admit it, but behaviorism is the method of choice. Remember, we ignore, cue, prompt, etc., before we intervene with consequences when dealing with a child’s behavior.
V. Hands On Texas believes that all children of all ages learn better when they do, and actively participate. Consider a choice when children (particularly in a group) are actively engaged in a task.
VI. Portfolios, journals, and informal assessment Texas LOVES these type of assessments. Always consider a choice when teachers use one of these in a classroom scenario.
VII. Learner-centered Texas did not label the Teacher Competencies using this term for nothing. Every decision the teacher makes should focus on the achievement of the learner. When in doubt, choose an answer that clearly favors an individual learner.
VIII. Culture When there is question about a culturally different learner or learners, always consider a choice which magnifies the dignity of the learner.
IX. Special Children Texas believes that children with special needs are best served in their own classrooms, not by removal to any other setting. Always consider a choice which entails modification of the existing classroom.
X. Bloom Bloom’s taxonomy is a must to memorize. When in doubt choose an answer when children are asked to synthesize, analyze or evaluate. Avoid any answer which focuses on learner memorization!
