A Road Information System / Road Data Bank u Is the basis for a national road information system where amongst others transport companies can plan for best use of the available road network and thereby reducing total cost for transportation. u would form part of the transport layer in a geographic information system for nationwide physical planning. A Road Information System is u a structured set of data describing a well defined road network and related items, u necessary tools to supply and maintain these data u sophisticated analysis instruments to retrieve information in order to make better use of the road transport system. Road Information System The aim of a Road Information System is to provide u proper knowledge about current road conditions u good knowledge on cost and effects from actions u proper tools to analyze the effects of actions in order to prioritize and plan for the best use of available funds.

By using a Road Information System based on: u Necessary organization u Cost effective IT-infrastructure u Structured sets of high quality data describing a well defined road network and related items u Necessary tools to supply and maintain data u Sophisticated analysis instruments to retrieve information Available funds would come to better use. Road Information System plan u Road network description and road referencing are the first steps in the development of a road information system and have to be established before any programming and data collection of road items starts. u IT strategy can, and always will, be an ongoing effort but Organization and IT infrastructure can be introduced in steps and has to be fully established when the first version of the road information system is to be released.
