DIVISION CLASS IV MATHEMATICS

In division, the number that we divide is called thedividend. The number by which we divide is called the divisor. The answer is the quotient. If there is a number left over, it is called the remainder.

Example: 30  quotient 8  243  dividend -24 divisor —— 03  remainder ——

The four terms defined above are connected in the following manners:  — quotient x 2  —–– divisor ——  ———— remainder ——  ————— dividend —— Using this relationship, we can verify the answer of a division sum.

Formula for verification: Quoitent  divisor + remainder = dividend Ex. dividend = 7595 divisor = 5 quoitent = 1519 remainder= 0

Copy the sums in your notebook. Work out each sum and verify the solution: 7  quotient 7  51  dividend -49 divisor —— 2  remainder —— verification = quoitent  divisor + remainder = dividend 7  = 51

Division of a 4- digit number by a 1- digit Number 15  quotient 3  46  dividend -30 divisor —— —— 1  remainder —— Quoitent x divisor + remainder =Dividend

Division of a 4- digit number by a 1- digit Number 1576  quotient 2 2 2153  dividend -2 divisor —— —— —— —— 1  remainder verification = quoitent  divisor + remainder = dividend 1576  = 2153

Copy the sums. Work out each sum and verify the solution: 1. 5     3  5 1096
