Partnership for Entrepreneurship Education 15 April 2011, Dublin Castle Trine Fuglsang, The Danish Enterprise and Construction Authority

Agenda  A Strategy, a Partnership and the Foundation  How did we get there?  What did we learn?  Status after the first year?  What is next?

The Danish Government’s Strategy

A broad definition of entrepreneurship:  Innovation for commercial purposes or value creation in a broader sense. That is to say a process, in which a person sees an opportunity, has an idea and implements it, with the result that the idea creates value. The creation does not need to be financial in nature.  The creation in an existing enterprise of new processes and/or products that can be of value to the existing enterprise or organisation.  Starting one’s own business and putting it into operation.

The Foundation for Entrepreneurship  From ABC to PhD : A national knowledge centre for education and training in entrepreneurship at all levels  A private foundation with board members mainly from the business sector  : Government grant of DKK 25 million per annum  Support educational institutions at every level to improve their commitment to education and training in entrepreneurship

The Danish Partnership  Partnership across 4 ministries  4 annually meetings with the Foundation  Coordinate legislation and initiatives  Provide the government with a better decision-making basis  Follow-up on performance contracts

How did we get there?

What did we learn?  Time consuming  It is important to build trust between the partners  Ensure who is responsible for the implementation of the strategy, if possible build on existing initiatives  Create one national entity to ensure coherence in the entire educational system  Strong commitment from the business sector is important

Status after the 1st year?  100,000 or 8.4 pct. of all students have received entrepreneurship education in the period 2009 – 2010  Examination of the Danish legalisation on education  Mapping of the level of entrepreneurship education and training at all Danish educational institutions  2 national entrepreneurial universities are established – The Foundation provided counselling to the applicants  Annual Education conference during Global Entrepreneurship week 2010  Scholarship - Proof of concept and visits to Danish entrepreneurs in Silicon valley

What is next?  In ,000 students will receive entrepreneurship education or training  In teachers at all levels will receive training or participate in events or  Investigation of the effects of entrepreneurship education throughout the whole educational system  National events – to raise awareness  A Nordic collaboration – to create critical mass and strengthen exchange of best practice  Talent development programmes for particularly talented young people
