How To Save a Life

Demonstration A SAMPLE LIFE

Suicide- When a person kills him or herself This might be preceded by bouts of self-harm that do not reach that extreme WHAT IS SUICIDE?

Every 40 seconds someone dies by suicide. It is especially common in people from age PREVALENCE

Check on your friends Be open with people when you are feeling like you need help Be positive to those around you Do not romanticize the idea Never say it as a joke or make it sound like an option Be there for people during hard times Don’t let someone stay alone; branch out Notice the little things HOW CAN WE PREVENT THIS?

Becoming secluded Giving away possessions Talking/thinking/drawing about death Non-interest in things they usually enjoy Not taking care of themselves Poor self-esteem Talking about their problems ending “Saying goodbye” or writing notes Preparing a method THE SIGNS

Ask them flat out. “Are you considering hurting yourself?” Tell them you want to get them help Take them to a medical professional or adult you trust Do not leave them alone until they are with a professional Do not take their offers of their possessions Ask them to talk to you Encourage, love, care, support Let them know it is not an option No matter what they say, get them help. (Even if they say they don’t want it.) WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. It will not get you attention, you won’t be able to rise above your problems and accomplish your goals, and you will only cause pain to your loved-ones. Life is too precious to throw away! Think about how your interactions with people usually go. Are you being attentive and including everyone? How are your thoughts of yourself? Are you being too hard on yourself or feeling hopeless? JUST HOLD ON

During this activity it is important to be in tune with yourself and where you are struggling, or others in your life who may be struggling. No laughing or talking is permitted during this activity. The loss of a life is a somber thing to be taken seriously. Find the picture that “speaks to you” the most and put your post it note on it. Then, go back to your seat and write about why. MUSEUM ACTIVITY

You never know where you will be if someone threatens to take their own life. To be prepared, put the suicide hotline number in your phone and write it down in your notes. Do not call unless you are actually with someone who is hurting themselves. SUICIDE HOTLINE
