UTA PRE-DENTAL SOCIETY 7 TH MEETING

DAT QUESTION OF THE DAY MATH Section: Two teams are playing a best-of-five series, which ends as soon as either team wins three games. If the two teams are equally likely to win a game, regardless of the outcomes of the others, what is the probability that the series ends after the first three games? Correct Answer: C. 1/4 The series will end after the first three games if either of the teams wins all three in a row. The probability that Team-A wins one game is 1/2, and the probability that Team-A wins the first three games is 1/2×1/2×1/2=1/8. Similarly, the probability that Team-B wins the first three games is 1/8. So the probability that either Team- A or Team-B wins the first three games is 1/8+1/8=1/4.

CURRENT EVENTS IN DENTISTRY Periodontal Disease Affects Nearly Half of the U.S. Population Date: June 15, 2015 Source: American Dental Association Nearly one in every two Americans over the age of 30 has periodontitis, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 46 percent of U.S. adults (> 30 years), representing approximately 65 million people, had periodontitis, with 8.9 percent of those people having severe periodontitis. The study notes that periodontal disease was more common among ethnic minorities. The disease affected 63 percent of Hispanic-Americans. A high prevalence of periodontitis also was associated with certain risk factors. For instance, increased poverty levels and lower education levels.

ABOUT THE DAT The DAT consists of a battery of four tests: Survey of the Natural Sciences (100 questions – 40 Biology, 30 Gen. Chem, and 30 Organic Chem) Perceptual Ability (90 questions - 1) apertures, 2) view recognition, 3) angle discrimination, 4) paper folding, 5) cube counting, and 6) 3D form development) Reading Comprehension (50 questions) Quantitative Reasoning (40 questions) Scores used in the testing program range from 1 to 30. There are no passing or failing scores; a scale score of 18 typically signifies average performance on a national basis. Cost: $415 Score Report Fee (optional) The fee for dental schools or other recipients NOT selected at the time of application. $34 per score report/school

DAT PREP The first thing to consider when preparing to take the DAT is the study material you are going to use: 1)Biology: Barron’s, Cliffs AP Bio ($11 at half price books), Kaplan book (one of these at the least) 2)Chemistry (organic and general): Chad’s videos on (Cost: $25 per month for organic/ $25 per month for gen chem) 3) Reading Comprehension: Kaplan book, read articles online 4) Math: DAT Destroyer 5)PAT- Crack the DAT PAT (Cost: $100) - For PAT you can find DAT BOOTCAMP videos on youtube – learn how to solve angle ranking, cube counting, and hole punching problems DAT Destroyer has practice questions from Bio, Gen Chem, O Chem, and Math sections

ABOUT THE DAT You have four hours and 15 minutes to respond to DAT questions (total administration time of five hours, including the tutorial, scheduled break, and survey). You must report to the testing center at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment. The scheduled (optional) break after the first two tests is the only scheduled break. When you take the scheduled break, the testing session will resume automatically after 15 minutes have elapsed.

WHEN TO STUDY After you have gathered your study materials: Make a study schedule that is based around your study material Set daily goals: ex. Day 15- Complete sections of Chad’s videos, read Chapter 13 of Cliff’s AP Bio, PAT – cube counting practice, read article The best times to start preparing are over the winter or summer break However, it is possible to do this during the semester as well You can break up your studying into 2 parts: Part 1- Learning Material: go over all the concepts the DAT will cover and develop your own notes. Part 2- Practicing Material: revolves around practice questions and reviewing content Use this to make a 10 week study schedule, or use it as a tool to make your own schedulehttp://datbootcamp.com/Ari'sStudySchedule.pdf

BEST WAY TO PRACTICE MATERIAL Your study day will consist of doing untimed sets of practice questions and reviewing your notes from your content review. About halfway through the you’ll switch to timed practice to begin building your test- taking skills. At the very end of the practice portion you will switch to full-length practice tests to build up your test endurance and stamina, as well as evaluate whether you are ready to take the DAT or if you need to postpone.

SEE YOU NEXT SEMESTER!
