WHY SHOULD I WAIT? Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) Medical: STDs

STDs are infections are by sexual activity. If you are not having sex, you won’t get one. There are over 25 types of STDs. Each one is either a viral or a bacterial STD. A Viral STD causes an infection that cannot be cured. Medicines can slow down viruses but not eliminate them. A Bacterial STD causes an infection that can be cured with antibiotics. Medical: STDs

STDs are spread by sexual activity. What is sexual activity? Sexual Activity is any contact with or touching of another person’s private parts (usually covered by underwear or a swim-suit.) Medical: STDs

Bacteria SOME COMMON STDS ARE… Viruses #1 HPV #2 Herpes (causes sores or blisters) #1 Chlamydia #2 Gonorrhea (causes infections) Medical: STDs

 Most people who have STDs don’t know they have them and can infect others during sex.  You can get an STD the first time you have sex.  Sexual activity can lead to emotional problems. Medical: STDs: Did you know that:

IS 100% EFFECTIVE IN PREVENTING STDS! (Abstinence)

IF YOU WAIT TO HAVE SEX, YOU MAY AVOID WORRY, REGRET, AND OTHER EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS THAT CAN RESULT FROM HAVING SEX TOO EARLY. Emotional

 Pre/teen years can be difficult and often stressful.  Sometimes emotional.  Full of important decisions. (Imagine how stressful it would be if sexual activity were added to pre/teens’ lives!)  Enjoyable when you make good friends and good decisions.

IF YOU CHOOSE ABSTINENCE, YOU ARE:  respecting yourself & your reputation.  respecting others & setting an example.  protecting your future goals & dreams.  keeping yourself health & safe. Emotional

$$$ Taking care of a child costs a lot of money!  Food  Shelter  Health care FinancialFinancial

IF YOU WAIT TO HAVE SEX, YOU WILL NOT GET PREGNANT OR GET SOMEONE ELSE PREGNANT! If pregnancy occurs, you’ll have...  parental responsibilities (you’re not a kid anymore).  fewer educational opportunities.  less money and little social life. Financial:Financial: PRE/TEEN YEARS SHOULD BE ABOUT… learning, developing talents & skills participating in safe, fun activities preparing for a great future NOT raising babies

Legal: Why Should I Wait?Legal:

Why do we have laws? To protect us. Most laws are made because many are being harmed. For example, the seat belt law. LegalLegal

Having sex as a pre/teen can result in serious medical and emotional problems. That’s why all states have laws to protect you. LegalLegal

Is this statement True or False? As long as two people want to have sex, it doesn’t matter how old they are. LegalLegal

The correct answer is: It is against the law for anyone under the age of 18 to have sex. If someone over 18 (an adult) is having sex with someone under 18 (a child), the adult could be prosecuted with a felony crime. LegalLegal

If an adult is pressuring you to have sex, tell them to STOP and immediately TELL a trusted adult. If someone has talked you into sex or forced sex on you, TELL a trusted adult immediately. If you are the one pressuring someone to have sex—STOP! This behavior is against the LAW IMPORTANT: Trust your feelings and instincts. If something doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t. It’s your body and you always have the right to say NO, even to an adult. LegalLegal
