Public Policy Impacts Security NFPA 730 / 731 and the impact on public policy

NFPA The mission of the international nonprofit NFPA is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating consensus codes and standards, research, training and education.

NFPA Briefings to Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) NFPA staff will brief AHJs on the contents of its code or standard, the consensus process under which the code or standard was developed, and its benefits. NFPA also helps draft language for model legislation and will testify at public hearings.

NFPA Established in 1896, NFPA serves as the world's leading advocate of fire prevention and is an authoritative source on public safety. In fact, NFPA's 300 codes and standards influence every building, process, service, design, and installation in the United States…

NFPA Code/Standard V. Guideline Code – Enforceable, can be imbued with the “force of law” by adopting AHJ Guideline – Meant to “guide”, a recommendation as apposed to a “standard”

NFPA 730 & 731 Technical Committees (TC) 730 – Guideline for the application of security and Security Risk Assessments and Security vulnerability Assessments (SVA) 731 – Standard for the installation of security related devices

NFPA Where it is headed –Task Groups – e.g. 730/99 –From a guide to a code Impact Voluntary Extra Jurisdictional (Best Practices – Legal) Local Code

NFPA How Should Public Policy and Industry “Best Practices” and codes impact public safety and security? How can you use them to your community’s advantage?
