Explain the functions of the Ministry of Truth, the Ministry of Love, the Ministry of Peace, and the Ministry of Plenty. How do their names and intended purposes show that the society described in 1984 has been brainwashed? Give three examples of “doublethink” that occur in the first 5 chapters of the novel.

1.Who is O’Brien and what is significant about him? 2.What does the Parsons family represent?

Answer the following questions regarding Book 1, chapter 6 1. What is the Party’s rules towards sex and marriage? 2. Explain “artsem.” Does it work?

For each of the following events from Book 1, chapters 7&8, explain: 1. the context of the event 2. the significance of the event (i.e. the realization made by Winston during that event, etc. 3. how the event connects to the themes in the novel (i.e. surveillance, mind control, identity, etc.)

1. “If there is hope, it lies with the proles.” (pg. 69) 2. Photograph taken in New York (pgs ) 3. I understand HOW: I do not understand WHY (pgs ) 4. “ownlife” (pg. 82) 5. Conversation with old man in pub (pg. 87) 6. Winston’s second visit to the junk shop (pg. 93)

LIST... 5 strong adjectives that describe Julia. Provide evidence and page numbers to support your opinion. 5 non-violent preparations made for Hate Week. 3 acts of violence likely to occur by the Party for Hate Week 5 things Julia believes that surprises Winston

Exit Ticket – 3/2/15 Tell me what is still confusing you about Are there concepts that you still do not understand? What questions do you still have?

“Airport Profilers...” article Use the article to answer the following EOC based questions.

1. Based on the context of paragraph 3, what is the best definition of “microfacial”? a. emotional b. expression c. small d. face

2. Which of the following quotes from the article best suggests that the TSA authorities do not profile a person based on his or her race? a. “There’s no reliable picture of a terrorist.” b. “For example, in some cultures people don’t make eye contact with people in authority.” c. “If you are acting a certain way, that’s what is going to attract our attention.” d. “Our message is to really focus on suspicious behavior rather than suspicious- looking people.”

3. Which of the following quotes from the article best states the main idea? a. “The program, however, has raised privacy and civil liberties concerns.” b. “Travelers at Sea-Tac and dozens of other major airports across America are being scrutinized by teams of TSA behavior-detection officers specially trained to discern the subtlest suspicious behaviors.” c. “SPOT began spreading out to airports across the nation two years after initial testing began in 2003 in Boston, Providence, R.I., and Portland, Maine.” d. "We're looking for behavior indicators that show a certain level of stress, fear or anxiety above and beyond that shown by an anxious member of the traveling public."

Book 2, chapter 3 – Who is Julia? Based on the information provided in Book 2, chapter 3 (pg. 126) about Julia, what can you infer about her beliefs and attitudes about rebellion? What does what you learned say about her true nature?

Book 2, Chapters 7 & 10 Complete independently: – Reread the end of chapter 7 (pgs ) and list at least 5 statements that could serve as thematic statements for the novel. – The large prole woman Winston hears singing from the window of his rented apartment symbolizes what? Why does Winston believe she is beautiful? (pgs ) – Birds sing. The prole woman sings. The Party does not sing. What does this signify in the novel?

“The ruling groups of all three powers are simultaneously aware and unaware of what they are doing. Their lives are dedicated to world conquest, but they also know that it is necessary that the war should continue everlastingly and without victory.” (pg. 197) Explain the context of this statement. What does this mean? Why is it significant to the ideals and beliefs of the Party? What is this Newspeak word for this?

(Chapter 9) According to “the book”... Use the handouts I ed you for this: Give at least 15 details from The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism that help you now understand the purpose of the creation of the Party. In other words, why did the Party come to be? Why were these pioneers threatened? What was happening that made them fearful?

Book 3 For each quote, give the page number and speaker, explain the significance, and tell how it connects to the themes of the novel. 1.“Who controls the present, controls the past.” 2.“What can you do…against the lunatic who is more intelligent than yourself, who gives your arguments a fair hearing and then simply persists in his lunacy?” 3.“But we make the brain perfect before we blow it out.”

“Under the spreading chestnut tree, I sold you and you sold me.” Explain the significance of this quote/song. How does it represent the relationship between Winston and Julia at the end of the novel? What does it say about their character in the end? What is the significance of The Chestnut Tree Café?
