Amelia Earhart Book by Brenda Haugen Project by Nora Donnelly Forever Flying Free…

Why She is Famous Amelia Earhart is famous for being a pioneer of female aviation. She first became a household name in 1928, when she was the first woman on a transatlantic flight. She set many records including 100km with and without a load and an altitude record with 18,415 ft. She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, the pacific, and coast to coast. She has various other records but is most famous for her try at flying around the world which she did not accomplish.

Why She Should be Admired Amelia Earhart should be admired because she knew what she wanted and she let nothing get in her way to stop her dreams. Her father was an alcoholic; the Earharts did not always have a lot of money. Since her father could not afford flying lessons for her she got a job and saved up money to pay for them herself. To appear more experienced she cut her hair short and rubbed oil on her jacket to make it look worn. She was skillful and did not mind getting dirty while cleaning the engine. She earned the respect of other pilots, most of whom were male, at a time when women were not supposed to do anything out of the ordinary.

One Might Ask Her… If Amelia Earhart were alive today, one would ask her what happened on July 2, 1937, the day she went missing in the pacific. She was aiming at becoming the first person to fly around the world. After a few static radio transmissions saying, “Gas is running low,” and “…we cannot see you,” the plane lost contact completely with the ship that had been guiding it. No one is sure what happened but both Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan were never heard from again.

Different Times One might not have liked to live in the time period during which Amelia Earhart was alive. She lived during WWI which was a tragic time for this country. Although women were becoming more independent in the ‘20s they still were not treated the same as men. Amelia also lived in a time when there was very few opportunities for women. They were expected to be good housewives. Amelia Earhart had her sights set much higher.
