Presentation transcript:

Photosynthesis Occurs in plants: Autotrophs. A process in which plants convert light energy from the sun into chemical energy in the form of organic compounds (Carbohydrates).

Chloroplast: Organelle where the process of photosynthesis occurs. Chlorophyll: gives plants its green color by reflects green light.

Autotrophs – organisms that use energy from sunlight to make organic compounds through the process of photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis Equations : Sunlight +6 C O₂ + 6 H₂0  C₆H₁₂0₆ + 6 0₂ carbon dioxide water glucose oxygen Reactant product

Word equation for photosynthesis 6 Carbon dioxide + 6 water  1 glucose + 6 oxygen.

Process performed by both plants and animals Glucose and oxygen  water and carbon dioxide

Heterotrophs : animals and organisms that consume other organisms to get energy.

ENERGY Energy for life comes from the sun for photosynthesis. During photosynthesis: Carbon atoms comes from carbon dioxide. Oxygen comes from water.

What is energy used for? Growth and reproduction Movement Transport material across the cell membrane

Plants can produce large amounts of oxygen because water can be split into hydrogen and oxygen. Glucose: a product of photosynthesis that is used as an energy source by all living organisms.

Energy flow Light energy  chemical energy  usable energy Energy transfer during photosynthesis: A. Light energy is converted into chemical energy. B. Sun  Chlorophyll  Glucose

Two stages of photosynthesis Light reaction Calvin Cycle

Calvin Cycle: The reaction that produce organic compounds(carbohydrates). Energy used n the Calvin Cycle comes from ATP and NADPH
