Highly Qualified Teacher Requirements There are three parts to meeting the HQT requirement: Teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, Teachers must have a certificate/license that is appropriate to their teaching assignment, and Teachers must be able to demonstrate their subject area expertise in the Core Academic Subjects (CAS: English, language arts, reading, science, mathematics, arts – dance, music, drama, visual arts, foreign language, government and civics, history, economics, and geography) they teach.

Big Ideas Use Highly Qualified Teachers in core academic subject areas – Use certified education professional (such as a counselor, principal) for non-core academic areas Use MOUs or agreements between organizations – HQT is waived, just as is the case with PSEO Avoid contracting with individuals

Metropolitan Cleveland Consortium for STEM High School Unique partnership with GE Lighting to support real-world learning experiences for Cleveland students GE volunteers provide instructional support (tutoring, mentoring, and job shadowing programs) GE volunteers assist school staff in the design and implementation of transdisciplinary capstones Read the full case study at

MC 2 STEM and GE Lighting Sophomore Project Employee creates design/build project which is tied to engineering competencies. Buddy Program Every student has a GE buddy; they meet twice a month. Tutoring GE employees tutor 10 th -graders who need/want support.
