Defining Pronouns  “Tell her what he said earlier.”  “Let him know he needs to hand it to me right now.”  “I owe you, because of that thing with the guy in the place.”

Pointing  In hearing culture, pointing is rude.  In Deaf culture, pointing is a pronoun.

Deixis  Deixis: to refer to someone or something by pointing to it.

How to Use Deixis  When possible, point to the real object or person.  If the object or person isn’t present, state what it is and establish a space for them. Then you can continue to point to that space.

Closing signal  Use deixis again at the end of a sentence when:  Making a statement about yourself or someone else.  Asking a question
