Roadmap to Next Generation Internet: Indian Initiatives Subbu C-DAC, India

Agenda Driving Forces Education and Research Network National QoS Testbed C-DAC’s National Grid Computing Initiative (GARUDA) Roadmap

Driving Forces India still in First generation Internet International initiatives towards NGN Revolutional technology and funding possibilities International collaborations and Interesting Research opportunities in Application, Engineering and Middleware Provide Dependable,Consistent, Pervasive, Secure and Inexpensive access to computational resources

ERNET Upgradation National QoS Testbed C-DAC’s I-GRID Towards NGN Indian Initiatives towards NGN

ERNET - History Education and Research Network Initiated in 1986 and funded by GoI and UNDP Participation by Nation’s Premier Institutions like NCST, IITs and IISc Objectives: State of the art Communication Infrastructure, R&D, Training, Consultancy and Content development

ERNET – Connectivity details The ERNET backbone is a judicious mix of terrestrial and satellite-based wide area networks International connectivity is achieved through gateways at New Delhi, Bombay, Bangalore and Calcutta, with a total capacity of 6.64 Mb Daily traffic over ERNET exceeds 20 GB

ERNET - Backbone

National QoS Test bed Collaborative effort from C-DAC, IITs & IISc QoS Test bed for experimenting with research ideas Outcomes expected would include Providing QoS in the Internet Interplay with non QoS networked applications Control and Management of QoS in IP networks

Envisaged Connectivity Creation of Local test beds connected to the QoS WAN Test bed QoS WAN Test bed will overlay on existing ERNET backbone QoS test bed traffic and regular ERNET traffic logically separated by running them over two separate VPNs

Research Areas in the QoS Testbed Development and deployment of technologies and solutions for distance education Experiment to provide application QoS by providing priority, RSVP and IntServ architecture Non Co-operative and Co-operative Measurement and Characterization IP Telephony applications Protocol support for Mobile Wireless Endpoints

Applications Robotic control applications Distributed simulation and CAD conferencing Applications end point API support for QoS on IPv6 Telemedicine and Real Time guided clinical investigations Deployment of IPTV, H.323 and SIP based telephony and Content Delivery Network

National Grid Computing Initiative: GARUDA Research and Engineering of Technologies, Architectures, Standards and Applications in Grid Computing. Platform for solving grand and challenging problems of national importance. Framework to facilitate collaborative research and development. Increase global competitiveness in HPC Sharing of computing resources, geographically distributed data and applications

Technology Development and Research

The Communication Fabric† (Proof of Concept phase) † 100 Mbps Connectivity

Grid Applications TeraScale Applications Weather and Climate modeling Seismic Data processing Computational Fluid Dynamics Structural Mechanics Basic Sciences Grid-enabled Applications Bioinformatics Disaster Management Data Integration & Sharing Other applications through G-UG collaborative efforts

Proof of Concept deliverables Technology Development and Research Design of 5 Gbps System Area Network Reconfigurable Computing System for bio-informatics Clustering software Grid Middleware and Access Mechanism Application Frameworks, Problem solving environment, Development and Collaborative environment 100 Mbps communication fabric covering 17 cities Aggregate existing resources at CTSF, Bangalore and NPSF, Pune Terascale and Grid enabled applications in selected domains Bioinformatics Disaster Management Data Integration and sharing

Garuda : A National Project of Strategic Importance Will unleash a comprehensive computational, storage and bandwidth capability Help maintain technological competitiveness globally Enable address critical user requirements, cost effectively Provide a collaborative framework for research in Cluster, Grid Computing and High Speed Networking

Roadmap… Progressive upgradation in backbone starting from 10Gbps in 2004 to multiple Lambda networks International high speed backbone connectivity Co-operative Research in the areas of the Engineering aspects of the high speed networks Progressive migration from research test beds to operational NGI to education and research community & other users Public-Private partnership towards NGI
