Teachers Choice to Carry Handguns By: Jessamine Howe

INTASC Standard #3: Learning Environments The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation. Description: In this power point, I will discuss my core belief on a contemporary issue that is occurring right now. Rationale: The power point provided is created in INTASC Standard #3 and will show that I am for teachers having the choice to carry a handgun.

Background Sandy Hook Massacre December 14, children died 6 adults died Many school boards rejected the idea, but recently since the Sandy Hook Massacre, state lawmakers are considering it.

Cons: It could send a bad message to students Concealed handguns could increase crime More likely to use handgun on confrontation Criminals could still attack even if teachers are allowed the option Concealed handguns may make the ones who don’t carry feel unsafe

Pros: Necessary self-defense Concealed handguns can reduce crime Teachers may feel more safe Most who use guns are law-abiding Can help stop school shooting The right training can be provided

Criminal enters the schoolSchool employee realizes unsafe – Calls 911 Minutes go by as police respondPolice arrive Police and other armed men surround the building Perspective While all the time it takes for law enforcement to get there, if a teacher is carrying a concealed weapon, they could have taken action if necessary.

Ms. Kasey Hansen Salt Lake City, Utah 26 years old Teaches special needs 14 different schools Protects her students They can not defend themselves Correct training to carry concealed firearm

Questions : 2.) We use firearms to protect the athletes, movie stars, and the presidents. Why should we not use them to protect our children? 1.) If a teacher is properly trained for carrying a handgun, would you feel safe with your children’s teacher carrying a handgun? Why?
