2 Violence in our schools needs to be addressed Second Step Program addresses aggressive behavior The proposal cost is $16,983.00 Start date of the program is June 2002 overview

3 our problem 10% of all schools experienced one or more serious violent crimes that were reported to police or law enforcement officials Physical attacks or fights with a weapon led the list of reported crimes in public schools [190,000] 45% of elementary schools, 74% of middle, and 77% of high schools reported one or more violent incidents

4 closer to home In the 1992 Center for Disease Control Youth Risk Behavior Survey, administered to a non- representative sample of Michigan high school students, 26% of the students reported having carried a weapon of some kind at least once in the last 30 days. our problem

5 90% of our schools are safe, which means 10% are unsafe Youth violence is a community issue Schools do not create violence, however school officials should play a part in the overall solution our problem

6 Second Step helps to teach social skills in a curriculum, beginning at the preschool age through middle school our solution the second step program

8 how do we get there? Hire and train a master trainer –This person will train others in the Second Step curriculum [Saturday seminars] –Master trainer will also serve as a support to the other trainers and will also be used for equipment backup presenter

9 Every other Tuesday morning from 10-10:45 for grades K-8 The curriculum contains approximately 20-30 lessons which vary in length from 20 to 50 minutes how do we get there? time commitment
