Presentation transcript:

 Journal: Compare and contrast the carbon cycle and the nitrogen cycle.

 Earth's average temperature has risen by 1.4°F over the past century  Projected to rise another 2 to 11.5°F over the next hundred years  Can lead to large and dangerous shifts in climate and weather

 Increased evaporation

 Altered rainfall ◦ Leads to flooding and droughts ◦ Severe heat waves  Oceans are warming and becoming more acidic ◦ Ice caps are melting ◦ Sea levels are rising

 Human activities have released large amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere through: ◦ Burning of fossil fuels ◦ Deforestation ◦ Industrial processes  Greenhouse gases act like a blanket around Earth, trapping energy in the atmosphere and causing it to warm ◦ This is natural and necessary to support life on Earth, but the buildup of greenhouse gases can change Earth's climate

 Deforestation is the logging or burning of trees in forested areas.

 Over population results in a depletion of resources that occurs when too many of at least one kind of living thing inhabits an ecosystem.

 Continued increase in temperatures

 Decreased amounts of ice and snow at the poles

 Sea level rise
