1 Title: Climate Change Starter:

2 Climate change Key Words
Objective: To know how the climate has changed Learning Journey 4.1 The Earth and its atmosphere 4.2 Sedimentary rocks 4.3 Igneous and metamorphic rocks 4.4 The rock cycle 4.5 The carbon cycle 4.6 Climate change 4.7 Recycling Climate change Objective: To know how the climate has changed Outcomes: Describe what the greenhouse effect and climate change are Explain the causes of climate change Explain the possible long term effects of climate change Key Words Climate change, deforestation, radiation, greenhouse effect, greenhouse gas 04/04/2019

3 What are the differences between the definitions for these three words?
Greenhouse effect Global warming Climate change Long term change in weather patterns The absorbing of energy by gases in the atmosphere (e.g. carbon dioxide) which keeps the Earth warmer than it would otherwise be The gradual increase in the Earth’s mean air temperature

4 Green house gases: Copy and label the diagram
Challenge: Exam Question: Explain how green house gases are linked to global warming. 6 marks Outcomes: Describe what the greenhouse effect and climate change are Explain the causes of climate change Explain the possible long term effects of climate change

5 Green House Gases: Use green pens to correct yourself
Challenge: Exam Question: Explain how green house gases are linked to global warming. 6 marks Outcomes: Describe what the greenhouse effect and climate change are Explain the causes of climate change Explain the possible long term effects of climate change

6 Discuss with your partner how the following graphs are linked to global warming (2min)
Outcomes: Describe what the greenhouse effect and climate change are Explain the causes of climate change Explain the possible long term effects of climate change

7 Exam question: Explain the causes and effects of climate change
Exam question: Explain the causes and effects of climate change. Try to use key words. You are going to plan and produce your answer to this six mark question after watching a video clop. You can use the textbook page to help you. Key Words Climate change, deforestation, radiation, greenhouse effect, greenhouse gas, rising sea levels, ice melting Outcomes: Describe what the greenhouse effect and climate change are Explain the causes of climate change Explain the possible long term effects of climate change

8 Swap with your partner and mark them out of six
Swap with your partner and mark them out of six. Any scientific point below has 1 mark. Complete their answers “in green”. Scientific points The greenhouse effect describes how carbon dioxide in the atmosphere absorbs energy from the Sun reflected off the Earth, and traps it in our atmosphere. Climate change is long-term change in our weather caused by high levels of carbon dioxide. The levels of carbon dioxide are increasing due to the burning of fossil fuels, which releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Deforestation leads to fewer trees being able to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. If climate change continues, the average global temperature will rise by around 5° C by 2100. Climate change will cause polar ice to melt, causing higher sea levels and flooding. Climate change will lead to more droughts and heavier rainfall. Some species may become extinct. It will be harder to grow food. Outcomes: Describe what the greenhouse effect and climate change are Explain the causes of climate change Explain the possible long term effects of climate change

9 Write down 3 things you have learnt

10 Answer the following questions in your learning outcomes
Answer the following questions in your learning outcomes. You can use your textbook to help you. Learning outcome Answer Describe what the greenhouse effect and climate change are. Explain the causes of climate change. Explain the possible long-term effects of climate change.

11 Learning outcome Answer Describe what the greenhouse effect and climate change are. The greenhouse effect describes how carbon dioxide in the atmosphere absorbs energy from the Sun reflected off the Earth, and traps it in our atmosphere. Climate change is long-term change in weather patterns. Explain the causes of climate change. Climate change is caused by increasing levels of carbon dioxide. This is due to the burning of fossil fuels, which releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and deforestation, which leads to fewer trees to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Explain the possible long-term effects of climate change. If climate change continues, the average global air temperature will rise by around 5°C by 2100. This will lead to melting of the polar ice, causing higher sea levels and flooding. It will also lead to more droughts and heavier rainfall, which may cause some species to become extinct and it will be harder to grow food.
