Using Technology to Achieve Mastery in Math

 This presentation will help you see how technology can be incorporated into your math curriculum…  …without giving up any of your tried and true, traditional ways of teaching.

 Technology can free up your time from the tedious tasks of:  assigning and grading homework on a regular basis.  creating multiple versions of tests and quizzes.  grading these tests and quizzes and getting them back to the student in a timely manner.  keeping track of your students’ progress.

 This will give you more time to concentrate on:  teaching  inspiring and counseling your students on how to achieve success in math…  through their efforts by using their.  through their own efforts by using their computerized courseware.

 As instructors, we need to accurately assess each student’s progress in mastering the necessary skills.  Technology allows us to know in an instant which skills our students have mastered and which skills they have not!

 A lot of our developmental students only want to do the minimum to get by.  Just ‘getting by’ will not provide the foundation needed to be successful at the next level.  Many of our students do not understand this!!  We need to teach our students to aim for skill mastery so they can do well in their next level of math!  And then show them how CourseCompass can help them master those skills!

 Students must discover which math skills are lacking, so they will know where to concentrate their study efforts.  Technology can provide that information instantaneously through online testing and reporting!  And that same technology can provide an individualized study plan for each of them, so they can do the work needed to achieve that mastery!

 The students will be more motivated to continue working toward further mastery as they get immediate, positive feedback on the work they are doing.  Technology can give immediate feedback!

 Our students need to take charge of their own learning…  …with the instructor acting more as facilitator.  This can be accomplished most effectively through the use of technology!

Mastery based learning is the key to achieving success in math!

Achieving Math Mastery through CourseCompass 1) The student begins with an online chapter test in CourseCompass to determine which skills have been mastered and which skills have not. 2) Upon completion of this online test, the student will go to the CourseCompass Study Plan and do the exercises for those skills that are lacking. CourseCompass includes online step-by-step tutorials and streaming video for those students that need them. 3) CourseCompass includes online step-by-step tutorials and streaming video for those students that need them.

Achieving Math Mastery through CourseCompass 4) After completing the required work in the study plan, the student is to take the same test over again to see which skills were mastered and which skills still need more work. 5) Upon completion of this test, the student will again go to the CourseCompass Study Plan and do the exercises for those skills that are lacking. The student will continue in this manner until all objectives are mastered. 6) The student will continue in this manner until all objectives are mastered.

Using Technology to Counsel an at-risk Student Through the computerized courseware, we can see exactly which skills the student has mastered (and which skills he has not). We can also see how much time the student is spending (or not spending) on tests and tutorial work… and counsel him accordingly by showing computerized evidence of his performance (or lack thereof). and counsel him accordingly by showing computerized evidence of his performance (or lack thereof).

 During these one-on-one conferences, the instructor can show these at-risk students how to properly use their CourseCompass courseware in order to be successful!

Teachers who understand how technology can significantly improve their students’ performance, will be more apt to use it effectively ….and will more enthusiastically encourage their students to do likewise!!
