1 Welcome to 5 th Grade! Mrs. Cherello ELA (English Language Arts)

2 About Me This is my 10 th year at Midland School #1. I have taught grades 6, 7, and 8. This is my 4 th year teaching 5 th grade. I have a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Scranton (my alma mater). This is my first school year as Mrs. Cherello. I will be married one year in October to my husband, Mike! My interests other than teaching are spending time with family and friends, traveling, watching football, live music, and shoppng, of course.

7 Homework Homework is given when necessary. Some days, students will be homework free. Other days, students could have more than one assignment. Students are expected to write assignments down in agenda book. If student is in band, missed work is expected to be completed. Assignments posted on board in Room 305 and on teacher website I expect 100% effort. I encourage help/checking over at home.

8 Grading Grades are based on the accumulation of points and observation. Points are based on: -Quizzes and tests -Completion of assignments (in class and homework) -Classroom participation (effort) Conferences are on an as-needed basis or during conference week.

10 That they love coming to school That they “get lost” when reading books That they view themselves as writers That they see themselves as artists That they realize some problems take time to solve, and are worth pursuing That they develop collaboration skills That they see each other as unique individuals who bring different perspectives That they can work with just about anybody in a positive and productive manner That they feel challenged but not stressed out That they realize if they don’t know or understand something, they just don’t know or understand it YET They continue to grow into who they are meant to be My Hopes For Your Children

11 Ways to help your child succeed: Establish regular homework time. Check your child’s agenda nightly or as needed. Read with him/her. Have backpack packed and any other supplies by the door before going to bed. Ask your child about his or her day - “Tell me about something you’re learning.” Encourage your child to do his or her best, ask questions, and contribute in class.
