Being focused and organised

Today’s Presentation  School reports  Homework  Diary  Attitude Hi guys, this is very important

Reports  Why are reports so important?  Reports allow us to analyse our academic performance. By examining our school reports carefully we can identify areas that we excel in and areas where we struggle.

Reports  The school report allows students to look at their ‘track record’. It shows them the areas where we they performing well and the areas where they need to improve.  If you pay attention to your reports well you can direct your study in a more effective way.  Reports show you where you need to focus your study and what you have to do to achieve better grades.

Reports  Your tutor should be going through your report with you at the start of every term.  Pay attention to what he says, this is important.  Obviously if you are going well in an area you don’t need to focus as much study there because you should be concentrating more on the areas where you performed poorly.

Goal Setting : Reports  Technics and Music are his worst subjects. Goals?  A goal for the student would be to focus on these weaker subjects next year in year 8.

Homework  Homework is a crucial way for a student to learn the course being studied.  If a student completes the homework given by the teacher most of the course content will be learnt and retained in their memory.  This becomes very helpful in terms of exam preparation.

Homework  Completing homework on time is a skill that will develop into a lifelong quality.  Order is key: homework must be prioritised in terms of importance and then completed before the due date.  Don’t leave it to the night before to complete a task if you can, start it earlier and loosen your time up, you can get ahead.

Homework  If students can master their homework in year 7 it will only become easier, even though the workload will increase every year.  Developing these organisational skills are very important.

Handouts A well used handouts folder  Why is it important to keep our handouts?  For STUDY  Studying the handouts will make the difference between getting 100% and getting 95%.

Handouts  Teachers give out handouts as an extra resource. Handouts very often will supplement the work that the class is studying.  The information displayed on some handouts will not necessarily be in your textbook so they are often very important.  Handouts can make excellent study tools.

Handouts – GOLDEN RULE  THERE IS NO POINT trying to look after your handouts and use them for effective study purposes if you are not prepared to look after them properly.

Handouts  How should we keep them organised?  The easiest way is to have a display folder at school and a ring binder folder at home.  Every week or so you transfer the handouts from the display folder to the ring binder folder.

Diary  The most important organisational tool that you have is your diary.  Students who teach themselves to use their study diary well will succeed.

Diary  USE YOUR DIARY PROPERLY!!!  All homework, assignment and exam dates must be recorded.  Scheduling when to begin preparation for assignments and exams is also crucial.

Diary  The effectiveness of a study diary depends on how well it is used.  If a diary is well used a student will hardly, if ever, miss out on completing homework and assessments.  On the other hand, if the diary is used poorly, students will often find themselves forgetting to complete tasks, resulting in penalties.

Diary  Diaries become more and more important with every passing year.  In years 11 and 12 students will find themselves receiving homework for 4-6 subjects almost every day. A diary is absolutely fundamental.  Diaries give structure, order and direction, and will help you to be a well organised and effective student and studier.

Attitude  Your attitude in class affects your effectiveness as a student and sets your study tone.  Normally, if a student can not focus and pay attention in class they are poor studiers at home, when there is even less motivation to work.

Attitude  A lot of what the teacher says in class is not repeated again, so if you aren’t paying attention you will miss out on a lot of important material.  It will benefit everybody in the class if all the students make an effort to focus.  Paying attention in class is crucial in Years 11 and 12 so you might as well start practicing!

Summary  1. Use your report card to determine the areas where you need to focus your studies.  2. Make a big effort to complete all your homework because you learn most of the content by completing it well.  3. Use your diary properly and it will help you to become a well-organised and effective student.  4. Bring a positive attitude to class and focus. This will help your study technique.

Good luck!!
