Responding to S&T co-operation with China – The Development of a Cross-Border Agro-Food Processing S&T Platform December 2004 Objectives The general objective is to outline a platform strategy by achieving the following specific objectives:  Identify the Mission and the areas of opportunity;  Identify potential partnerships;  Identify potential activities on developing cross-border collaborations;  Identify sources of funding for platform sustainability.

Responding to S&T co-operation with China – The Development of a Cross-Border Agro-Food Processing S&T Platform December 2004 Discussion Topics Platform Mission  Define the platform Mission;  The platform should bring together leading individuals, representing the diversity of the sector to promote long-term cooperation on issues relevant to processing chains for fruits and vegetables.

Responding to S&T co-operation with China – The Development of a Cross-Border Agro-Food Processing S&T Platform December 2004 Discussion Topics Platform Partnerships  Identify potential participants (e.g. individuals, associations, agencies, etc.);  Stakeholders identified throughout the project and Core Project Team members can act as a starting foundation for the initial platform partnership;  Existing food networks can be drawn on and leveraged (e.g. Global Food Network, Asian Food Safety Network, etc.);

Responding to S&T co-operation with China – The Development of a Cross-Border Agro-Food Processing S&T Platform December 2004 Discussion Topics Platform Activities  Identify potential activities to build partnerships (e.g. individual missions, networking workshops, etc);  Provide specific topics that will attract interest from relevant fields of the agro-food processing sectors (e.g. Traceability, advancements in modified atmosphere packaging);  Identify other means to attract interest from the relevant Chinese and European sector Communities;  Develop platform tools that will provide necessary assistance towards developing partnerships as well as attract interest from the targeted sector communities (e.g. Partnering Database, Topic Based Communities, etc).

Responding to S&T co-operation with China – The Development of a Cross-Border Agro-Food Processing S&T Platform December 2004 Discussion Topics Platform Financing Sources  Identify potential national and international funding sources for the Platform’s long-term sustainability (e.g. EU 6 th Framework Programme, Asian Development Bank, etc.);  Identify, if possible, revenue generating platform activities (e.g Web site banner revenue from sector industries).
