Responding to S&T co-operation with China – The Development of a Cross-Border Agro-Food Processing S&T Platform December 2004 Project Objectives  Enhance S&T co-operation between Europe and China within the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) framework.  Exchange experiences in the S&T field.  Build bridges between the European Union and China’s agro-food processing sectors. This will be accomplished through developing a cross-border agro-food platform strategy. The strategy is aimed at promoting new S&T partnerships and identifying means of implementing and supporting a successful cross-border agro-food S&T co-operation in the domain of fruit and vegetable processing.

Responding to S&T co-operation with China – The Development of a Cross-Border Agro-Food Processing S&T Platform December 2004 Codex Alimentarius Codex and International Food Trade The publication of the Codex Alimentarius is intended to guide and promote the elaboration and establishment of definitions and requirements for foods to assist in their harmonization and in doing so to facilitate international trade.  A principal concern of national governments is that food imported from other countries should be safe and not jeopardize the health of consumers or pose a threat to the health and safety of their animal and plant populations.  Governments of importing countries have introduced mandatory laws and regulations to eliminate or minimize such threats. Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS) Agreement  The SPS Agreement sets standards for China so that their products will meet the standards of the EU.  The SPS Agreement clearly affirms a WTO member’s rights and authority to adopt and implement regulations to establish the level of sanitary or phytosanitary protection deemed by the member to be appropriate.  SPS measures can play an important role in the restriction of free trade.
