P URPOSE OF THE MISSION To study the density of the upper atmosphere. Also to go to space and orbit a planet.

O UTCOME OF S PUTNIK The outcome of the Sputnik was the space race, which culminated in the moon landing in Sputnik 1, launched the first man-made object to orbit the Earth.

I NTERESTING I NFORMATION ABOUT THE S PUTNIK Sputnik 1, launched the first man-made object to orbit the Earth. Sputnik 2 carried the first living passenger into orbit, a dog named Laika. Sputnik 5 launched with the dogs Belka and Strelka, 40 mice, 2 rats, and several plants on board.

Q UESTIONS ABOUT SPUTNIK 1. When was your major event and what country launched the exploration: On October 4, 1957 by the Soviet Union. 2. Who were the astronauts that flew in the exploration: Lloyd V. Berkner, Wernher Von Braun, Hugh L. Dryden, Robert H. Goddard, John P. Hagen, Joseph Kaplan, James R. Killian Jr., Sergei P. Korovev, Homer E. Newell, William H. Pickering, Mikhail K. Tikhonravov, Konstantin E. Tsiolkovskiy, and James A. Van Allen. 3. What mission was part of it: All of the missions because it was the first satellite. 4. Were there any complications during the exploration: Yes 5. List five other interesting facts about your topic: 1.) In order to beat the USA into orbit, Korolyov suggest launching two small satellites during 1957, ahead of the one he originally proposed. 2.) Laika, was the first dog that was sent into orbit.

L AST T HREE INTERESTING F ACTS ABOUT S PUTNIK 3.) Sputnik was the first artificial satellite successfully placed into orbit around the Earth. 4.) The Russian word “Sputnik” means companion (“satellite” in the astronomical sense). 5.) Sputnik 11 also called Vostok1 was the first to carry a human, Yuri A. Gargarin, into space.
