Space Race! By: Regan Jake Alex Spencer

First satellite  When the USSR caught wind that the United States had nuclear missiles, they decided to launch the first satellite into outer space. Its name was Sputnik and it was launched in October of 1957.

Second Satellite  When the USA found out Sputnik was a success, the launched the Explorer. The USA was concerned that the USSR would be able to turn their technology into nuclear missiles.

Impact on Warfare  When the USSR launched the first satellite, USA officials now knew that the Soviet Union had missiles powerful enough to attack the United states.

Impact cont.  Since the USA knew of the USSR’s accomplishments, the war then consisted of a “race” to see who was more advanced in space technology. (satellites, missiles, spacecrafts etc.)

First humans in space Yuri Gagarin was a Soviet pilot. He was the first human to journey into outer space, when his spacecraft completed an orbit of the earth on 12 April 1961.

More people in space  German Titou – USSR  John Glenn – USA  Malcom Carpenter – USA  Andriyan Nikolayev - USSR

US Space programs The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is the agency of the US government that is responsible for the nation's civilian space program and for aeronautics and aerospace research. On July 29, 1958, Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act establishing NASA. it began its operations on October 1, 1958.

USSR Space Programs The Soviet space program is the space exploration programs conducted by the former USSR from the 1930s until its dissolution in 1991. Over its sixty-year history, this primarily classified military program was responsible for a number of pioneering accomplishments in space flight, including the first intercontinental missile (1957), first satellite (Sputnik 1), first animal in space (the dog Laika on Sputnik 2), first human in space and Earths first orbit on Vostok 1.

Apollo Series  The Apollo Program was a series of space flights conducted by NASA to successfully land the first man on the moon. This program started during the presidency of Dwight D Eisenhower.

Apollo 11  Apollo 11 was the first successful space flight to the moon, President Kennedy's goal was accomplished with the Apollo 11mission when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed their Lunar module on the Moon. They landed on July 20, 1969 and walked on its surface while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command spacecraft. On july 24, all three landed safely on the earth.
