Space The area in which an artwork is organized. It covers the area within a work of art, and can include the area outside of and around a work of art.

3 Components of space Space is always part of an artwork, sometimes in multiple ways. There are 3 main components when talking about Space: Positive & Negative Space Illusion of 3-Dimensional Space Linear Perspective Drawing

Positive space Positive Space is the area the object or subject actually occupies Positive doesn’t mean “good”

Negative space Negative Space is the area around the object or subject matter Negative Space supports the foreground of the picture

Notan 濃淡 Nōtan is a Japanese design concept involving the play and placement of light and dark as they are placed next to the other in art and imagery.

Expanding the square A traditional Notan starts out as a square You then cut out Positive Shapes and lay them down as a mirrored, symmetrical image The Negative and Positive Shapes AND Spaces are reversed

Using lines and shapes This example uses line and shape (two elements of art) It is also Symmetrical

Using shapes and lines This example also uses shape and line This example uses Asymmetry

How to expand a square Rough Draft Determine a THEME Draw out the shapes and lines you will use in SKB first Draw out your shapes and lines on the black square Cut out black pieces (keep all pieces) Arrange pieces on your paper Glue pieces down
